Name change requests Edit

Account Deleted? Edit

err, before the merge, I was able to login perfectly with no problems, but once the merge happened, I couldn't login. So, I made a new account with the same name, and while making it I saw that my email address was open. I used the same email to make my previous account, so I'm awfully confused. I had over two years of edits on that account and then just loosing it just irks me. I would like a little clarification on that because I haven't seen any other stories of others accounts being deleted. CubiaReborn 16:43, September 3, 2009 (UTC)

Hi! Your edits certainly weren't lost, but we may need to do some work to figure out what happened. Was your previous username CubiaReborn too? --KyleH@fandom (talk) 21:54, September 4, 2009 (UTC)

Explanation/Apology Edit

Hi KyleH

I'm one of the LyricWiki administrators, the one who meddles ;)

I just wanted to apologise for editing your "Rename" talk page, but I feel it is important that everything to do with this awful renaming situation is kept together and I could see that you hadn't copied over the users' posts in their entirety, only the username requests.

I sincerely hope that someone is going to sort this mess out asap, because with users being told that their user names have been taken when they clearly haven't, contributions being allocated to incorrect user names and amalgamated with other users contributions, this situation is getting worse by the minute.

Яєdxx Actions Words 10:14, September 5, 2009 (UTC)

Hi Redxx,
Thanks for the heads-up! We're working on it, and hope to be able to resolve it pretty soon. I'll let you know when I have more information. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 18:56, September 9, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks KyleH. I don't think it matters which side of the fence you sit on, we both got headaches from this particular problem. Thanks for all the help you are providing and good luck in resolving it!  Яєdxx Actions Words 23:34, September 12, 2009 (UTC)

Search index appears to not contain old articles Edit

Searching for "hootie goodbye" returns nothing and searching for "hootie" returns two articles, both of which were created after the LyricWiki data was imported. That appears to me as though the index is possibly just being created for new pages but hasn't indexed old pages. Will it catch up by itself or do we have to kick off the rebuildIndex.php maintenance script?
-Sean Colombo 02:33, September 6, 2009 (UTC)

We should be implementing Lucene search for LyricWiki some time this week. Hopefully that will resolve 99% of the issues. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 18:57, September 9, 2009 (UTC)
I hope that by "resolve" Kyle you will make these users happy, because with that, the rename and the contributions problem, I fear that we are losing many of our users...  Яєdxx Actions Words 05:14, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
I completely agree. There seems to be increasing frustration over losing both contributions and identity in the move.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   16:42, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
Just a quick update on search: I anticipate that we'll have a proper search up and running by the end of the week. I'm sorry about the delay in this. :( --KyleH@fandom (talk) 23:05, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
We have enabled Lucene Search for LyricWiki. Hopefully that will fix most of the search problems. Try it out and let me know what you think. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 19:20, September 18, 2009 (UTC)

Admin/Group Rights issuesEdit

There are two users listed as admins at Special:ListUsers/sysop that aren't, and when I go to change their User Groups, they aren't checked as being admins and while the table shows that they have edits, nothing shows up in their contributions. The "Last Edited" link for these two shows an edit time for those pages that does not exists. (Of course, so does mine, so perhaps I'm interpreting that info incorrectly.) Also, User:WillMak050389, who has been a site admin for 3 years wasn't listed until I just a bit ago changed his User Groups to include him.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:17, September 7, 2009 (UTC)

From what I can tell if a person is considered an admin but hasn't made an edit here at Wikia, they are not checked as an admin when I go to the User Rights utility. I tried to give one of those accounts that shouldn't be admins admin status and then revoke it to see if that cleared them out, but when I went back to the User Rights utility, it still wasn't checked.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:38, September 7, 2009 (UTC)
P.S. I used to (as a site b'crat) be able to assign Users as Trusted. Can this ability be restored. I don't see in Special:ListGroupRights that anyone can assign Users as trusted.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:43, September 7, 2009 (UTC)
By default, a user is only shown in ListUsers if he or she has at least 5 edits on the wiki. I'm guessing that currently only works if those edits are on Wikia. I'll investigate. Regarding the Trusted flag, you should now have the ability to add and remove that flag. Let me know if you have any trouble. Thanks! --KyleH@fandom (talk) 19:05, September 9, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, the "trusted" application is available again. It's helpful for patrolling purposes, that's for sure!
I'll e-mail you regarding the non-admin sysops.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   19:31, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

User names and Edit

1.) When will the user name chaos be resolved? I'd like to get my contributions back! 2.) The domain is still not available. HdEATH 15:38, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

Hi! TOR is working through most of the user name problems on Sean's talk page. You can check the status there. Once all of the other bugs are taken care of, he will start working through the renames. I'm hoping that we'll be able to finish that by the end of the week. Regarding the domain, that issue should be fixed now. Please let me know if you have any more difficulty. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 23:03, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

I was looking something up on the site as a "regular Joe", not signed in, and while I appreciate the need for the ads, there is an instance that is just obscenely annoying. An ad shows up on Artist pages where the first album's art goes. I went to the Pink Floyd page, and there were FIVE ads for The Jay Leno Show. There was a banner at the top, two in the left-most column, one at the bottom of the page, and the obscenely annoying one in the "substance" of the page. The ads are there, already. No reason to turn off users like other lyric sites do. That ad's placement will make people go running from the site. Can this be remedied?    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   01:18, September 16, 2009 (UTC)

We are currently experimenting with the number and placement of ads on all of our sites so that we can find the best compromise between the revenue required to operate the site and the user experience sacrifices created by different ad units. This is especially important with LyricWiki because we are paying substantial licensing fees to the music industry in addition to all the hosting, maintenance, and support costs that go in to running the wiki itself. I don't believe that we have found the right balance yet, so I totally understand your concerns. It's something that we will continue to tweak going forward.
That said, I can tell you that we've done pretty substantial testing, and have found that the current advertising arrangement (both the number of ads and the placement of them) causes no statistically significant decrease in pageviews, edits, new visitors, or new editors. I agree that it isn't exactly pretty, but the ads themselves don't tend to scare people away like you might think. I think that most users who browse the web regularly are pretty used to the types of ads that they see on Wikia. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 19:39, September 16, 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, my watchlist tells me differently. Almost all of the edits that I've seen on my watchlist since coming here are admin edits, and many of those edits are on talk pages as we're talking back and forth trying to figure things out and help each other. I'd estimate that it used to be about 60-75% admin edits (mostly Senvaikis, Redxx, & 6x9), except on days where a bot or two were working. True, a few semi-regular editors don't appear to be editing because of the re-naming and contribution issues, but I used to have to take about an hour to patrol my watchlist, and now there are only about a dozen non-admin talk pages to look at each day. And as a person who browses the web regularly, if I saw a site that had an ad placement like I mentioned, I would truly go away. Like many, that's part of what kept me at LyricWiki in the first place, the fact that the ads weren't so "in your face." I think that that means that internet ads need to follow the same placement structure as one would find in a newspaper. You'd never find an ad running in the middle of an article. So, here's hoping that the tweaking is successful. If anything, I want to see this site work and succeed for all concerned.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   02:04, September 17, 2009 (UTC)
I think that the other problems (renames, etc.) are having more of an impact than the advertisements. We're pretty close to getting the last of those taken care of, so hopefully we'll see edits pick up again before too long. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 18:23, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

null or not an object Edit

Hi KyleH

A few days ago I noticed some strange changes on LW (FF & IE):
  • button "MORE" in userpage top-right linkbar now is 'emasculated' - it's not disabled, but doesn't work anymore;
  • Widgets and WidgetDashboard stopped working - no d/d, no adding;
  • and the worst thing: button "Code View" in page edit window bottom-right is also 'emasculated', so disabling normal page categories editing.
Initially I thought that all these changes may be caused by some my experiments trying to customize my profile (editing user/monaco.css and user/monaco-sidebar). I removed them, but that didn't help. Then I logged as another user (I have other incarnation (as Lwt) here for bot-like tasks) - the same behavior. So, these changes likely have nothing in common with my customizing games and must be treated as bug.
Here's an IE error message, (double click on yellow exclamation error icon in bottom-left corner of most LW pages, opened in IE), as one of evidences, that something goes wrong:

I've reported this to our tech team. Hopefully it will be resolved shortly. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 16:20, September 24, 2009 (UTC)
Hi! Just a quick update: we've been able to fix the problems with the "More" button, widgets, widget cockpit, and code view on categories. We're still working on the flyout menus. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 20:08, September 24, 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia Links...Edit

...are currently broken. I'm not sure why.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   11:20, September 23, 2009 (UTC)

Someone, somewhere, did something that broke our variables extension. All templates which rely on variables (and that includes Song-, Album- and ArtistFooter as well) don't work properly. — 6×9 (Talk) 11:23, September 23, 2009 (UTC)
This should now be resolved. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 16:22, September 24, 2009 (UTC)
Some issues with this still appear to remain. (Or have returned.) If the Wikipedia link is "plain", such as with Bon Jovi, the link appears to work. If the Wikipedia link has an "add-on", such as with Kiss (band), the link doesn't work. (Actually, on preview, both examples are broken, but the link on the Bon Jovi page does work.)    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   20:40, September 24, 2009 (UTC)
I figured out the problem and I think I fixed it. Earlier today we removed /lyrics/ from the url of pages on the site to return things to the way that they were pre-move. We made sure that pages redirect, but the wplink template uses {{localurl:}} in kind of a strange way in order to create the link to Wikipedia. I fixed it to work with the new url, but it should probably be rewritten so it changes to the wiki url won't affect the template. Do you have any idea why it was written that way? --KyleH@fandom (talk) 21:24, September 24, 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know. It's 6x9's creation. He's our most active template creator currently.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   04:43, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
urlencode: can't be used because it replaces spaces with "+", not underscores. I suppose we could do a #replace: on those afterwards though. I wanted to avoid replacing all offending characters "manually" because there's at least one apart from space that needs replacing (") and I don't know what else there might be lurking. — 6×9 (Talk) 05:10, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
hmmm, we should probably use interwiki links instead. It looks like the interwiki map isn't set up properly though. I'll look in to that and get back to you. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 21:07, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

Lyrics/* Edit

This list is growing after removing /lyrics part from url. Is it temporary or should all these pages be deleted? tia, --Senvaikis (talk) 06:17, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

At least this one was created manually. Maybe there's some template or page which uses direct URLs instead of wiki links? — 6×9 (Talk) 07:18, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Ok, 6 - we've cleared this list (for that moment). But try to make simple experiment: go to any artist page you've worked resently, and try to open random songs. I'm almost sure some opened pages will contain "Lyrics/" suffix. At least I watched this effect on Robert Cray. I think that goes from browser cache (the same page, opened in a new window, has correct address). So, I think we must clear our browser's cache... --Senvaikis (talk) 12:08, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Keep in mind that really all songs on artist page are still linked to "/lyrics/*" (view page source)...--Senvaikis (talk) 12:15, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
That would explain why I don't see it (not in sourcecode either) – my browser clears the cache when I exit. — 6×9 (Talk) 13:30, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
That's really strange. Are you sure you've checked RC page? Because on my box even cache cleaning haven't change source code of this page. But now at least redirection to "/lyrics"-stripped addressed pages is working. Btw, in contrary to RC, Meat Loaf generates stripped version of source code... So, PostMoveShow is goin' on :)--Senvaikis (talk) 13:51, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Yep, checked RC page and its source code, no "lyrics/" anywhere. Clearing the cache doesn't always do what it's supposed to… Where's the "wiki/" prefix coming from, though? — 6×9 (Talk) 14:16, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Feeling stupid. Working now on other (home) box, using other account, even other skin; - result the same: all tracks links in RC page still contain the same prefix. Are we speaking about the same "generated source code"? I meant html code of loaded page (not code, written in page edit window). Anyway, I was right speaking about break necessity (for me). Hope all these curiosities will be over when I return from Turkey ;) obo senv --Lwt 17:05, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Other machine, same browser but older version, same page (RC) (and I didn't purge it) – neither the page itself nor the source code (yes, we both mean the same thing) contain the string "lyrics/" anywhere. Seriously weird. — 6×9 (Talk) 17:52, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
You're obviously not the only one, though, since new pages with prefix are still being created. — 6×9 (Talk) 17:54, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Some pages were probably still cached on our end, but I'm told that everything should be clear now. Are you still seeing pages created with the /lyrics prefix? --KyleH@fandom (talk) 21:04, September 25, 2009 (UTC)
Nevermind. Looks like they're still being created. I'll ping someone. --KyleH@fandom (talk) 21:12, September 25, 2009 (UTC)

(unindenting) Still the same situation on my side. Hard refresh, browser cache clearing, account or skin changing doesn't affect the final RC page html (on IE8, GC3 & FF3.5.3):

</li><li> <b><a href="/lyrics/Robert_Cray:That%27s_What_I%27ll_Do" title="Robert Cray:That's What I'll Do">That's What I'll Do</a></b>
</li><li> <b><a href="/lyrics/Robert_Cray:I%27d_Rather_Be_A_Wino" title="Robert Cray:I'd Rather Be A Wino">I'd Rather Be A Wino</a></b>

LyricWiki Challenge @ Facebook Edit

Hey Kyle,

I hope you have some information on the LyricWiki Challenge not working anymore on Facebook. Are you working on that issue? How long do we have to wait?

Nice greetings and Merry Christmas!

P.S.: For an answer, just e-mail me to (yeah, I'm German :D)

Hi Sebastian! I hope that you had a great holiday. We are aware of the problem with the Facebook app, and we will be working to resolve it soon. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how long it will take to fix that issue because we're working on a bunch of other high-priority tickets for LyricWiki as well. Sean is collecting all of the problems on his talk page, so you can watchlist that page in order to be notified of any status changes. Thanks! --KyleH@fandom (talk) 22:58, January 7, 2010 (UTC)

API Login changed? Edit

Hi, KyleH,

Starting from yesterday something has changed in api login procedure (action=login). Now, trying to login with only two parameters (username & psw) in postdata, it fails with response rezult="NeedToken" and token value. Trying to use given token for subsequent login (with delay>5s, adding it as third parameter lgtoken) fails also with the same rezult="NeedToken" and new, different token value. As a result, now I just can't login into api, using httpRequest Post method. Can you help me or redirect me to someone else, please? tia, --Senvaikis (talk) 06:53, April 15, 2010 (UTC)
