There are a lot of singers and groups who have been around for a very long time, yet many of us don't know that they were in other groups or recorded under other names. For example as a teenager, Chicago native Minnie Ripperton recorded with a group named the Starlets during the early and Mid 1960s. She also had a brief solo career recording under the name Andrea Davis before joining the Rotary Connection in the late 1970s.

Frankie Beverly is originally from Philadelphia. Before his group became know as Maze (the name supposedly suggested by Marvin Gaye), they were Frankie Beverly and the Raw Soul. However, even before that he sang with a group named the Butlers.

The Spinners were originally the Detroit Spinners dating back to the 1950s. Ohoi bor and Detroit raised Anita Baker sang with Chapter 8 during the late 70s and early 80s.

Luther Vandross has a career as a background singer, and recorded with the groups including Luther and Change.
