As the season winds down, there are some lessons that still have not been learned. The judges don't get that their comments do have some effect - they tend to swing the voters away from anything that they say. That means that the praise that they gave Lauren could set Scotty up to be the winner. Next, the temperature from last week seemed to indicate that people were not impressed by Haley's guitar-playing father. In fact it may have hurt her. I'm not sure how you can be an "Idol" and at the same time appear to be apron-string tied to your parents. Finally...ballads, ballads, ballads. Ballads are the key to winning American Idol. I'm joking about all the above...but not completely.
I completely did not like Scotty at the beginning o…Read more >
There are a lot of singers and groups who have been around for a very long time, yet many of us don't know that they were in other groups or recorded under other names. For example as a teenager, Chicago native Minnie Ripperton recorded with a group named the Starlets during the early and Mid 1960s. She also had a brief solo career recording under the name Andrea Davis before joining the Rotary Connection in the late 1970s.
Frankie Beverly is originally from Philadelphia. Before his group became know as Maze (the name supposedly suggested by Marvin Gaye), they were Frankie Beverly and the Raw Soul. However, even before that he sang with a group named the Butlers.
The Spinners were originally the Detroit Spinners dating back to the 1950s.…Read more >
Because I've transcribed and input quite a number of song lyrics now, I have observed that different artist may change the lyrics slightly – or even extensively - in their versions. I find this to be of concern because while the original song is generally considered to be the standard, I have seen instances where a cover or remake's lyrics have just be copied and pasted from the original song. At times this presents glaring errors and I believe hurts the integrity and authenticity of the site. I will take great pains to present the lyrics as they have been recorded. I would urge that particular attention be paid to this when inputting lyrics.Read more >
Scotty, Lauren and Haley had an opportunity to really showcase themselves last night. They finally had the chance to do three songs and display their depth and versatility. Much to my surprise, Lauren seemed to be the best prepared and well put together. She looked good and sounded good each time. Even if she did have a slight slip in the middle of her last song, most of the public would have never taken notice if the judges had not harped on it. I say kudos to her. She has truly come a long way from the completely goofy (still sometimes slightly goofy) school girl to a somewhat polished performer who is clawing her way into contention to be in the big time.
Haley even surprised me. I wasn't altogether impressed with her first two se…Read more >
I am so over the "shocking results" from this show that I can’t even get upset by the outcome. I enjoyed the performances, but nothing about it really comes as a surprise for me. So while I do not like Haley I say “good for her.” She has taken the expression “using what you’ve got to get what you want,” and put it into action. Last night reconfirmed for me that the voting is often more based on emotion, sentiment and whether the communications systems are working properly than the actual talent and persona of the performer (which actually are the elements of a true "idol.") And she has worked that sentiment like a pro. And for all of the conspiracy theory nuts, that’s not what this is all about so hold your horses.
