The Night

The night had fallen, it was late and we were weary
The city streets were hard and cold.
Your glass was empty, and your eyes were frightened
We watched our sorry tale unfold.
You had to leave me, that's the way it always happens
And it was almost morning, so you fled into the day.
But I was night, and stayed to raise my glass with others.
They didn't see you'd gone away.

And when you left you took along with you our story.
It's like a song without a rhyme.
But I could tell you hundreds of those stories,
And I'd be lying every time.
Each time you leave the dawn is breaking in the heavens.
When lovers part new worlds will always start to take on form.
But when you left you made no promises to guide me,
It was the lull before the storm.

So come again and yet again to show me fully
That time is dead for you and me.
But what is living flows and sturges through us,
My river rushes wild and free.
It was so quiet, we were weary when it happened,
The morning was so empty, it was big and clear and white.
And all my friends went home, and none of them suspected,
But nothing's hidden from the night.

At tiden dør imellom oss
