Problem Edit

It appears that during the process of merging users from the original LyricWiki project to the Wikia user database, there were quite a few snafu's. This page is to help me (and User:TOR) organize the information into one place so it can be fixed once and for all.

Some symptoms Edit

Users have been renamed and there is no list of their original names vs. current names
Contributions have been inappropriately applied to the wrong users, making page histories extremely confusing
Edit counts are possibly messed up even after fixing renames
Even after fixing renames, watchlists have been lost in some cases.

Ideal outcomeEdit

This is how we'll know we're done (if this is even possible):

All users can log in with their original username if possible.
All contributions should be correctly attached to the user who made them. We're pretty sure TOR's script fixed this. If you find any examples of users whose contributions are attributed to the wrong user, please let us know.
All users should have their watchlists back in order. This may involve merging the watchlist from original project with the lists they've created during the period that this has all been broken.
In cases with a user-name collision, there should be a page with mappings from old usernames to new usersnames. This is primarily for debugging.
Potentially an email could be sent out to users whose name has been changed and who have not logged in successfully since the migration.

Unfortunately, as much as we'd like to give you that, it's not possible. At least not in all cases. The renames were done due to the fact that we had to incorporate the accounts into our shared user database and there were sometimes clashes with pre-existing Wikia users. Now, that said, sometimes we can get the old name back for you -- e.g. if you own both accounts (old Wikia account and LyricWiki account) or if the Wikia account has never edited. I'll talk to Kyle on planning, and we'll probably let you know somehow (sitenotice?) of a rename list to put your name on in order to get renamed. --TOR 22:39, September 15, 2009 (UTC)

However I've got to say that a lot of our users have very unique user names, User:Cubs Fan2007, User:6 times 9, for example, and I just find it incredibly hard to believe that there are Wikia accounts with the same names as these and all our other LyricWiki users. So it seems very much to me that everyone got renamed, regardless of pre-existing Wikia accounts. I suspect because it was probably easier to overcome the problem by renaming everyone, rather than sort these accounts on an individual basis.
Another possible explanation for this is that what Kyle is interpreting as a Wikia account with the same username, (i.e. "Kiefer already exists elsewhere on Wikia. Please choose a different username for the rename.") is in actual fact the LyricWiki ones.
Out of interest I went to view the contributions of some of these pre-existing Wikia accounts but they are all red links. Further, when you arrive on the page you are informed that the account is not registered... ♫_♫Яєd_xx_♪♫♪_♫♪ ^Actions _Words 23:45, September 15, 2009 (UTC)
By "renames" we mean renaming back from a LYRIC-* account to another one, *maybe* the original name, more often -- something different. If an account hasn't been renamed to LYRIC-* by now (that is: if you can successfully log in with your old username) your account will not be touched again. That is true for 6 times 8, Cubs Fan2007, yourself, and a great many other users. Sorry TOR but I don't really understand "If an account hasn't been renamed to LYRIC-* by now"...because we were ALL renamed LYRIC-*.
As for logging in under our normal usernames...Well seems to me that if you were quick off the mark like me, 6x9, Cubs, etc. you could do that. But I don't believe anyone likely to be able to do that now, do you?
I am really hoping you will be able to restore our usernames back to what they were, because I feel you should know that "contributions" only includes those edits we all made in the mainspace and on our own userpage. As such it does not include any edits to talk pages (including our own), or any pages in any other namespace for that matter. As such we have no record of these in our personal contributions. Added to which, all the links our editors, administrators and bureaucrats have created outside of the mainspace since the site came into existence are all now dead, broken, invalid, empty...
I'm sure you can appreciate that this is not an acceptable situation. It was totally unnecessary to rename everybody for the sake of a few that may have been affected. And I still believe that the only reason our normal usernames are unavailable is because they have been reserved for us to use. Can we have an update on the renaming situation please TOR, or shall I just tell users to move their user pages themselves? Please bear in mind in resolving this, not only the upset that this is causing to our users, but the sheer havoc that renaming all our user accounts has resulted in causing to all the links (posts, edits, etc.) created throughout the site since it came into existence. ♫_♫Яєd_xx_♪♫♪_♫♪ ^Actions _Words 12:33, October 2, 2009 (UTC)

Watchlist Problems (from Sean's talk page)Edit

Thanks for looking into this. As for your questions: I assumed that everyone who had problems with the name change lost their watchlist, but I guess this is not the case. I don't know anyone specific that has the same problem. A few of my watchlist items that are pretty obscure would include: any Pink Floyd related redirects (full list at LyricWiki:Pink Floyd/Page Rankings), I am quite sure that I had every single link from that page on my watchlist, even the redirects. I was probably the only one watching User:WillMak050389/iLyrics "Not Found" List also.

It seems all of my contributions were attributed to User:LYRIC-Punktab, so I assumed this is where my watchlist would be too. --WillMak050389 14:53, November 1, 2009 (UTC)

See, my contribs'd gone to LYRIC-Chris and I could log in as LYRIC-Chris with my password from my old lyricwiki.org account - my watchlist had gone there and everything was the same like before except for the new account name, the contribs and the moved userpage (just the mainpage, the subpages stayed at User:Chris/... as far as I can remember). - Chris 15:46, November 1, 2009 (UTC)

Hi, same problem here. My contributions are attributed to LYRIC-Zildjan. I guess most/all usernames are wrong or in some kind of temporary state. But since I couldn't find any information about that I just wanted to let you know. Hope/Guess that get's fixed. HdEATH 09:03, September 2, 2009 (UTC)
