Strange selective bug in REST API getArtist()
Hi, Sean. Here is the sample of FF 3.0 output of API request (slightly edited - otherwise spam filter blocks):
XML Parsing Error: junk after document element Location: http://lyricwiki.org/api.php?func=getArtist&fmt=xml&fixXML&artist=Metallica Line Number 3, Column 1:<b>Warning</b>: mysql_connect() <a=fnctn.mysql-connect>fnctn.mysql-connect</a>]: Too many connections in <b>/var/www/html/lyricwiki.org/server.php</b> on line <b>161</b><br />
That might signify that server has some overloading difficulties. But the same request most other Artists somehow returns quite well-formatted response. For the present I found only 2 artists, affected by this bug: Metallica and Pink Floyd. It is interesting that getArtist returns well-formed xml for all artists if additional parameter fixXML is ommited. So, seems that the problem lies in using of this parameter...

- Yup, that was a traffic problem which appears to have been fixed completely by our recent upgrades & new server-power :) -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs)
Search Lyricwiki for Suggestions
Hello. I'm working on a lyrics fetching script for amarok2 using lyricwiki and I was wondering if there's a way to use the api to search for a particular song (ie to get suggestions when the song can't be found). Thanks for your time. (reldruh)
- Hi reldruh,
- There currently isn't a way to do this and it's not on the roadmap as something we're going to be doing in the short-term. The reason for that is that when we tried to implement something like this, we realized that it was way too much work for the servers to be able to do. API traffic is something like 20 times the web traffic and that only works out because right now it's very efficient. Any sort of true search with near-matches would be too much work for the servers to handle unfortunately.
- Thanks for the interest though & for working on the amarok script,

Line breaks not appearing in lyrics called from the API
I use XBMC to play my music, and I have a script for it called XBMC Lyrics which automatically grabs the lyrics from lyricwiki.com. To be honest, I'm not 100% sure if it uses the API or not, so maybe I'm reporting the wrong thing.
But basically, for every song I've tried it on (so far, Vanessa Carlton:A Thousand Miles, Angels & Airwaves:Everything's Magic, Veggie Tales:I Love My Lips and Within Temptation:Our Farewell), it grabs all the lyrics just fine, but the lyrics are just dumped all on one line. I'm going to try editing a page on here and putting in line breaks on every line to see if that makes a difference, and then I'll upload the dumps I'm getting so you can see exactly what I'm seeing.
Hope I'm helping. -007bond 22:45, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
Following up on my last post:
First of all, here's a link to the exact dump of what XBMC Lyrics called from lyricwiki.com for Veggie Tales:I Love My Lips: text dump
Secondly, I added HTML line breaks to the end of every line for the song Veggie Tales:Hairbrush Song and then called it from XBMC Lyrics. It appeared to make no difference whatsoever. Here's a link to the exact dump of the lyrics: text dump.

To answer your main question, yes, the script worked perfectly before the upgrade.
I'm not 100% sure how XBMC Lyrics parses the lyrics it receives, or how it displays them on-screen. All I know is that it's done using Python scripting. However, I'll see what I can do to get onto the developer and see if they know what's up and if they can fix the problem.
And lastly, I'm more then happy to help. Ever since I discovered this site it's been my one-stop shop for lyrics. Even friends who I've pointed this site out to who just used to use any site they found on Google now come here because it's easily the fastest, easiest to use, and most accurate.

Just thought I'd follow up on this. I posted about it on the XBMC support forums, and the problem's been fixed in the latest version of the XBMC Lyrics plugin. link to description. -007bond (talk|contribs) 10:08, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
- For some reason, something changed with the line-breaks. I still haven't been able to figure out what's different (maybe a /r/n vs. /n problem?) because the raw output of the API looks the same - however several programs that use the API have reported problems handling the line-breaks now. Still no idea what was different or how they fixed it (would love to hear from one of them though).

SEARCH ENGINE not working
Stopped working a couple weeks ago. All you get is a blank page. Somebody ought to get on that. KTHX
- Hi there,
- Thanks for reporting this... I can't reproduce the problem though, it all appears to be working fine from here. What operating system/ web-browser are you using and are you using one of the search bars on the site or the Open Search plugin on your browser?
- Thanks for any additional info you can give me,

- Followup: Haven't heard anything from this guy since the first report and haven't had any problems with searching or any other reports, so I'm assuming this may have been a temporary problem. -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 19:50, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
getSong() album name
Hey, would it be possible to have the getSong function return the associated album name and potentially the album artwork?
I am working on an app for my college's radio station which checks lyrics for FCC violations so that we don't accidentally play a song with one of these violations and have to deal with the FCC...
The rough beta is available at wprkfm.com/fcclyrics2.0.php.
If I am able to retrieve album name, then I will be able to use APIs of Amazon and Discogs to display artwork and labels. Thanks for all the hard work you've been doing on this API.

- I like the app, that's pretty sweet. Adding the album and the album-art would be pretty cool (the album-art might hammer our bandwidth-costs though). That's definitely something that makes me wish I'd built "versions" into the API so I could just upgrade a minor version and throw that in there.
- When, oh when will I make v2.0 of the API? :-/ ...there's got to be something that would make me justify the time.

Old Admins
If possible, I would like to get revoke admin privilages for users that haven't been active recently and don't respond to queries. Do you think that giving a week for a response is reasonable?
Also, Daralajara was trying to catch you on IRC earlier today.

Spam Filter
Much of the spoken parts of To Beat The Devil by Kris Kristofferson should be in verse form. There are real and almost rhymes throughout as well as an underlying meter. The words were already there, added by Uberbot, but as prose. When I tried to save the versification the Spam filter said that I had entered inappropriate content. I did not enter anything. Uberbot entered the text.
Would you please over ride the filter?

Thanks, but LW seems to have a problem with the accents in bot name. Can it be changed to "MotoBot" instead?EchoSierra 06:11, 17 September 2008 (EDT)
- There doesn't seem to be a user named MotoBot yet. MW doesn't let you change usernames very easily, so just setting up another user would work best. The umlaut thing is a pain to deal with but it can be overcome (ÜberBot uses umlauts for example).
"S2E2" is the new bot. Can you please change it to a bot account? TIA EchoSierra 02:20, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
