Bloody Vikings!
(Wanted to post this on User talk:Sean Colombo/Spam Reports, but couldn't save because "Pharmacy-for.us" triggered the spam protection filter... Oh, the irony!) Have a look at this – he (or rather it; must be a bot) is repeatedly spamming the same page. -- 6 times 9 00:17, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- Cool. Taken care of. Thanks for reporting it. -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 01:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Bot Policy
Sean - I've been editing LyricWiki for a little while now. I've been especially trying to promote the page ranking scheme. However, I end up spending almost all my time performing similar or exactly the same edits on the various song pages in a given album. What is the LyricWiki policy on bots? I created an account to potentially use as a bot, and have installed the software, but haven't used it yet. I am planning to just use it on one album at a time, so it shouldn't affect the whole database at once. Is there a petition or policy page where I can request a bot / register my bot? Thanks, ♠team a ‹talk•ctrb› @13:34, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, we don't have any specific bot policies, but generally it's nice not to hit the server more than once per second. If you just write the bot to do what you want, then run it for a little bit... leave me a message on my page & we can switch it over to have a bot flag. Bots generally start out without a bot-flag intentionally so that their changes show up in Special:Recentchanges in case there is a bug or something, so people can help you track it down.
- Thanks for the contributions :)
- -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 13:58, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'm going to spend some more time setting it up tonight. For now, I'll add it to LyricWiki:Bots. Thanks again for your help! ♠team a ‹talk•ctrb› @14:52, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- Sean - Please flag User:The Notorious B.O.T. as a bot. I don't plan on making a whole lot of edits quite yet, but I've started, and I am worried about clogging up watchlists/recent changes with the consecutive edits I do make. I'd really appreciate it. ♠team a ‹talk•ctrb› 03:23, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
SOTD titles
Sean, I was just wondering if the "artist:song" formatting used on the main page could be changed to the name of the actual song, instead of a page name type format. As far as I can tell, this begins at the SOTD Nomination template. Changing the main page to reflect an actual song title (Like "Song, by Artist") wouldn't affect any user input at all (not help pages, different use of the template, or ÜberBot behavior), because the template already asks for artist and song separately, and immediately after it's requested, ÜberBot has been set up to just copy and paste (as far as I can tell). However, I wanted to run it by you before changing something like this, especially as it involves your bot and the main page. (see my post at SOTD Nomination template talk page - it includes my proposed edit and everything) ♠team a ‹talk•ctrb› 01:02, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

I hope that I can solicit you for something
I've been looking into getting a new job, and was thinking that I might be able to get a recommendation letter from you. Let me know if you would entertain the idea.

Automatic Talk Page creation
Hey Sean, I was wonder what you thought about extending the automatic page creation regexes to include talk pages. The same regexes would apply, just add the _talk extension and then create a blank green artist|album|song as appropriate. Thoughts?

- Hey Aquatiki,
- Hmm... sounds like it'd be annoying not to have that there if you were doing a bunch of page-ranking, so I added it in. I am a little worried that it might intimidate new users who are trying to comment (esp. since that seems to be one of the first things they try when they are horribly confused). I put a <!-- comment --> in the template which tries to explain things, but I don't think I worded it terribly well. Feel free to change it if you can think of something better.
- Thanks for the idea,
- -Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 09:59, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Lol, why thank you :)
- I saw what you were trying to do there with the change and tweaked the code a bit so that the type of Rank would be automatic. That should save some time when using the templates.

Various FLETTER "Magic Words"
Is it possible to get the various FLETTER magic words (I believe that's what they're called) changed so that they do not skip over the articles "The", "A", and "An"? (I tried to see if I could fix the autogenerated templates, but while I found them, I couldn't figure out if I could adjust the FLETTER business.) We discussed correcting this long ago, when we were discussing the fLetter business, and it has come up again on the Administrators Portal. Thanks! Kiefer talk contribs admin 04:02, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- NoooOOOOoo! :P
- I think we should change the documentation on this one! I still do not see how the best thing would be to have a gigantic "T" section. Its more intuitive the other way (when I think "The Kinks" I think 'search under K').
- King_Nee1114 (talk page • contributions • deletions) 06:54, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- This has been discussed many times in the past, and the difficulty comes with the site being an international database. We aren't English-only, both in terms of content and users, and the organization shouldn't be English-centric because of this fact. Changing fLetter with regards to the page beginning with an article would be a bit confusing for non-English speakers. Try explaining to a Japanese user that "The Kinks" is filed under K because "The" is a part of speech called an article. Then do the same for a Russian user and a Spanish user and a French user and a Chinese user, etc., etc., etc. Your way is more intuitive for you, but not for others. The answer to this situation, I feel, is creating sub-categories for The, A, and An titles and sub-sub-categories for each letter A-Z. Much like we do for Hometowns and Languages. Bot work, I would think. Kiefer talk contribs admin 19:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- It looks like this issue isn't going to go away..
- Here's a post I put on this page back in August...which at the time was referring to this very informative post on Aqua'a page....which in turn led to this discussion which was commenced over a year ago by teknomunk. Then we have this posted recently in the Community Portal... I'm sure there have been a few other posts too.
- I know I'm a day late (rfl) but some things just have a way of coming back to "haunt" you http://www.xs4all.nl/~ernstmul/images/msn60/smile009.gif. Hope that helps! ♫♫Яєdxx ♪♫♪♫♪ Actions Words 12:05, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- The logic! The well reasoned points! Nationality-neutral LW! It burns us, burns us, precious!</lord of the rings ref> I kind of forget (repeatedly) about the idea that it should be neutral. Once the point is mentioned, then I go 'huh, that does make sense'. So here I am, reverting what I said before. I suppose we should get those magic words changed, and run a script with one of those fancy bots that are running around our site lately.
- Sorry to be the one to retard progress again I am kind of a fogey in that way
- King_Nee1114 (talk page • contributions • deletions) 04:05, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- You haven't retarded progress KingNee, not at all. Nor will I have it said that you are a fogey! It's just that the issue has never got resolved and so we forget the logic behind what Kiefer is saying....until he reminds us that is http://www.xs4all.nl/~ernstmul/images/msn60/smile009.gif. I think it is time this long overdue matter got sorted, so can I suggest that once it is decided exactly what it is that needs to be done, someone puts a request in over at the LyricWiki talk:Bot Portal? ♫♫Яєdxx ♪♫♪♫♪ Actions Words 04:23, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- OK, thank you Red. I'll stop saying things like that about myself! And of course, once it were resolved, the Bot Portal would be the first place to hear about it. Provided of course that it wasn't already undertaken by a bot's owner the moment there was consensus. You must admit, you guys in the Botpack are pretty pre-emptive.

- Sorry for the delay... been busy getting rid of those ringtone links, lol - find out how to get rid of them. Alrighty, fletter fix is done. "The" is now treated like any other word, and starts with "T". :) Thanks for figuring that whole thing out guys.
