This is the talk page of a bot. Asking a question here will probably be answered eventually, but it would be quicker to address the bot's current operator Sean Colombo.
  Khelpcenter

Janitor is a bot, and he is doing exactly what he was programmed to do: add Song pages to the "Other Songs" sections on Artist pages that aren't linked to from anywhere (i.e. they are "orphaned"). Janitor does this so that humans can then allocate these songs to albums, or redirect or move them if appropriate. If moving or redirecting the page is not an option and you do feel that a particular page does need to be deleted, add the {{Deletion}} template to the top of the page as outlined above.

Known Bugs Edit

  1. Creating new pseudoartists by adding "A" to "The Artist" ([[A The Monkees]], [[A The Specials]])
    • Not Janitor's fault, but GNBot's – who moved the "A " from start of songtitle to start of pagename [1], [2]
  2. Made a page for an artist which was actually Artist:Song because there was a song with a colon (":") in it (example).
    • For now just skipping 'artists' with colons in them. -Sean Colombo 06:28, May 27, 2010 (UTC)
  3. The bot keeps adding 2 songs by the German Impending Doom onto the American Impending Doom page Cameron X-Factor Jones 20:52, May 2, 2012 (UTC)

Added songs that aren't orphaned to "Other Songs" section Edit

LYRIC-Janitor has been repeatedly adding the song Blaqk Audio:Bon Voyeurs and creating an "Other Songs" section on the Blaqk Audio page... This is problematic because it inserts it in the middle of the ArtistInfo template, so then the Genres and Labels templates don't show up. Also, the song is no longer orphaned, but it keeps being added to the "Other Songs" section anyway. The first time it happened, the song actually was orphaned, so I added it under an album heading and deleted the "Other Songs" section as it was no longer necessary. Every day since then, it keeps creating a new "Other Songs" section and adding the song, even though the song is no longer orphaned. Yesterday, I even purged the Blaqk Audio page and went to the Bon Voyeurs "What Links Here" page to make sure that a page linked to it, but the same thing happened again today (adding the no longer orphaned song to the "Other Songs" section). According to LYRIC-Janitor's contributions, the same thing is happening with the formerly orphaned song Mozart avec Nous, which is a redirect to the correct page now.  JessicaGlynn - Talk 21:48, August 3, 2010 (UTC)

{{mergeto}} Edit

There are some cases when additional care should be taken, depending on the target of redirect:

  1. redirs to disambigued artists (Cage (band), (Cage (rapper) etc.)
  2. wrong redirs (e.g. artist->album, as in case of (Cruel Intentions - [3]) (Oliver!)
  3. multiple {{mergeto}} instances
  4. {{mergeto}} in redirection pages (all TRCB redir pages)

--Senvaikis (talk) 22:02, June 5, 2011 (UTC)

Eek, yeah that's a lot of special cases & there shouldn't be all that many pages needing mergeto's from this anymore so I just disabled the adding of {{mergeto}}'s for now. If we end up wanting that back, I'll fix each of these cases.
Thanks for finding these!

Never Enough orphaned songs Edit

The four orphaned songs that you added to 'Never Enough' are from the a different 'Never Enough' band.

One Heck of a Prize Fighter 21:25, June 7, 2011 (UTC)

Please stop Edit

Please stop adding orphaned songs to the Enigma article. I've made a strenuous effort to keep the article organized, and all orphaned songs are just superfluous entries, or entries that are distinguished only by typos or mistaken titles. Continuously adding this information is only hurting the article's quality. 70.153.98.139 19:00, June 20, 2011 (UTC)

Responding on User_talk:70.153.98.139... -Sean Colombo 20:30, June 20, 2011 (UTC)

I consider myself an expert on Enigma, as I own the *entire* discography. (even the rarities and other odds-and-ends) None of the orphaned songs belong in the main article. I've included all miscellaneous works under "Singles and Other Works." The orphaned songs consist only of typos, songs that were credited to Enigma in bootlegs, (but aren't actually Enigma works) and alternate titles of remix tracks that are already featured in the article. The article currently covers Enigma's ENTIRE discography. Not a single element is missing — not even iTunes-exclusive commentaries. Believe me — it is all there. I have spent hours making sure of this, and even cross-referencing databases like Discogs. Feel free to confirm the research, if you like; but please, please stop adding redundant and mistyped information to the article. If possible, include a blacklisting function in your bot and blacklist Enigma. 70.153.112.82 01:58, July 12, 2011 (UTC)

Please... Edit

Um, I know you are a bot, but could whoever is controlling you STOP putting other songs on the page Keith Green. Those songs are either wrongly spelled or just in different category. They are already in albums. Why put the same songs in other songs? Thanks...ÂØˇÂ⁄⁄ 22:34, July 13, 2011 (UTC)

Snow Patrol Edit

Janitor, for some reason, adds improperly formatted pages to the Snow Patrol page. I.e. these "lyrics" aren't even legitimate links. Once fixed, however, they do lead to actual pages. Despite trying to fix it, Janitor goes back and incorrects it, as he's programmed to do. But it's wrong. --— Radical D (bother \ stalk) 18:10, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

The pages do exist (which is why Janitor tried to add them); the links didn't work because of the double apostrophe in the pagename, which is used for formatting and therefore apparently wasn't interpreted as part of a pagename. I've redirected the pages, they should leave you in peace now :-) — 6×9 (Talk) 18:19, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

That was quick. Thanks a bunch. Just a minor irritation. Glad it's fixed now. --Deyvid Petteys 19:00, July 26, 2011 (UTC)

Crush 40Edit

LYRICS-Janitor. Follow me was NOT Crush 40. It was made by Kay Hanley. This Machine was made by Julien-K. Do some research before saying a change is wrong.Sonicman667 17:19, August 2, 2011 (UTC)Sonicman667

Heh. You ignored the infobox at the top of this page and told a bot to do some research… Delicious irony! :-) — 6×9 (Talk) 19:10, August 2, 2011 (UTC)

Why put other songs? Edit

Most of the songs in the "other songs" are already in the lists. Why put them there still?

Thank You

Nina Simone: One edit - two questions Edit

Two questions about one your edition on Nina Simone page:

  1. am I right, supposing that link to NS 'subpage' (second chapter) was removed inadvertently?
  2. Are you sure that it's a good idea - flooding OS lists with red-links to emptied GN-takedown placeholders, with all possible their title variations?
thanks, --Senvaikis (talk) 19:50, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

Edit

Looks like Janitor is having trouble with the "=" character in pagenames: [4]6×9 (Talk) 08:49, November 3, 2011 (UTC)

Still the same 4 months later... --Senvaikis (talk) 12:05, March 13, 2012 (UTC)

Unnecessary "Orphan" AdditionEdit

The Janitor keeps adding back (no matter how many times I remove it) an entry for Angelspit:Defibrillator at the bottom, creating an "Other Songs" listing; the problem is, only about 6 lines above is the same track, properly listed under the appropriate album. About 4 or 5 additions of the track back, I noticed that someone had misspelled the title and appropriately redirected to the one the Janitor added, also correcting the links. But, since then, it keeps adding the song back (as well as the "Other Songs" section) at least once a day. I can't figure out why... Perhaps you can. - Ssmodk 12:46, February 28, 2012 (UTC)

Looks like Special:LonelyPages hasn't been updated in a while, it says "last updated 07:19, 25 February 2012". So it would still show pages that have already been allocated/redirected/etc. It might be a good idea to stop Janitor until this is resolved. — 6×9 (Talk) 14:02, February 28, 2012 (UTC)

Another bug Edit

Seems Janitor also has problems with additional text after OS links: [9]6×9 (Talk) 09:06, April 6, 2012 (UTC)

After a second look, it's apparently not the extra text but the brackets (). — 6×9 (Talk) 09:07, April 6, 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I was wondering why you added (for instance on the D'Angelo page) the songs again which are already on the albums? For instance the song Lady is already on the album Brown Sugar, so why add it to other songs? Same for Cruisin', One Mo'gin, Untitled (which is not the correct song name), chicken grease, devil's pie, Greatdayndamornin'/Booty, Dreamin' Eyes of mine (which is also not the right name, it's Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine, which is already on the brown sugar album, The Line, The Root, and some more. Just wondering, because I thought I cleaned it up nicely.

Encoding problems again Edit

If someone's still driving you, he may want to look here, here or here. --Senvaikis (talk) 21:56, November 10, 2012 (UTC)

Think I've got the encoding _in_ most pages fixed. He still seems to be confused about some artist names though. Looking at it...
-Sean Colombo (talk) 03:11, December 22, 2012 (UTC)
I think the encoding issues are fixed in both bodies and titles. He appears to be making good edits now. Please let me know if you see anything bad happening. (it's a little befuddling to me how the utf-8 could change suddenly... did the Perl libraries on my webhost change? did wikia change something? weird.).
Thanks for banning Janitor while he was misbehaving! Much smaller mess to clean up now ;)

VacationEdit

You didn't run last night! on vacation?! --ES (talk) 02:31, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

Looks like there were server problems last night and it all timed out. Hoping that's what it was, but that's Janitor's best guess from his logs. Hopefully he just needed one night off & will be back in a few hours!
