[edit] Translations

Dear Bearcat,

6, Chris and I are in the process of finalising the above, e.g. updating the help page, etc., during which I raised a question about a sentence that has always puzzled me on the Help:Translation page, namely "N.B. Please only submit original translations".

It seems that I am not the only one that was a bit puzzled as to what this meant either, because it puzzled Chris too.

Anywayyyy, 6 provided a couple of links by way of explanation and so I now understand what this sentence was attempting to say. This in turn has led to me thinking that we need to add a proper note somewhere about copyright of translations. Since I don't think it is appropriate to include this on the help page (and it could also act as a deterrent), I have provided a link at the bottom of the translation help page to LyricWiki:Copyrights. I'm sure you'll agree that this would seem to be the best place to provide this information. However, since it is a legal issue, could I ask you to do it please? Thank you x Яєdxx Actions Words 00:10, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

So, is that good/everything you wanted & more? PS: Mariah Carey's page needs help. The Artist with the most #1 singles in history (at least in the US), and there isn't any album art? What's up with that?    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   05:04, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes, everything I wanted & more. Although...hee hee, some people are just never satisfied;)...do you think we need to add something along the lines of "If you find your translation on this site and haven't given permission for it to be used, contact an administrator who will arrange for it to be removed. " Or is that stating the obvious?
The only thing we got to do now is work out exactly where the copyrights page should go because believe it or not, the only links to this page are from Sean's archive (Yes, all that effort. It made me laugh too). Ok, I don't think we should give this page too much prominence, but considering the importance, I really think it should be linked to from a help page or a main page. Any ideas?  Яєdxx Actions Words 09:27, 5 August 2009 (UTC) P.S. Mariah is now on my "to do" list.
Eventually, it should probably be added to the main "Policy" list at Help:Contents. But that should probably be after the licensing project is completed. For now, I've added it to Category:Policy. Hopefully that helps a little?    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   20:22, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes that was what I was thinking too. It is where it belongs, but because it is such a touchy subject... Anyway thank you :-)
However this has raised another question in my mind-

[edit] Policy

What exactly is "policy" ? And what is not? The reason I ask is partly because of the use of the word (like on the "In a nutshell" template), and partly because of the help pages that have been segregated from the rest and put in Category:Policy. Because to my mind, the page ranking help pages are no more or less "policy" than the other help pages.  Яєdxx Actions Words 22:07, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Rfl. Did you spot my silliness? No? Well in my first post I say: "I have provided a link at the bottom of the translation help page to LyricWiki:Copyrights". And then, in my next post "I really think it should be linked to from a help page..." Duh!  Яєdxx Actions Words 00:42, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Wow. I missed that. Slipping, I guess. :-] Policy to my way of thinking is like the Laws of the Site. Most of the help page items are more style guidelines and template instruction, but not really laws. There are usually some gray areas. Policies shouldn't have grey (equality in spelling!) areas. So, I guess the Page Ranking fits by that definition in the Policy category. It is page ranking policy, after all. Not a guideline or a style thing, so....    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   04:04, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes I can run with that. LyricWiki:Page ranking should remain in Category:Policy with LyricWiki:Page Names, etc. but not the "Help" pages that you and I wrote. So can I remove them and put them with the other help pages then?  Яєdxx Actions Words 23:21, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good to me.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   02:33, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
LyricWiki:Policy If you read that page, then go to say either LyricWiki:Copyrights or LyricWiki:Page ranking it kinda seems inappropriate. My interpretation of policy is like yours, important rules to be followed. But I gotta say that to ban a user for not putting a bronze star on a song page does seem a little harsh to me...(lol)
Oh and btw Eventually, it should probably be added to the main "Policy" list at Help:Contents I've also added the LyricWiki:General disclaimer page too and left a note for Sean to this effect.  Яєdxx Actions Words 23:03, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
But I gotta say that to ban a user for not putting a bronze star on a song page does seem a little harsh to me...(lol) Hrm. Now that you mention it, perhaps Policy items should be those things that could possibly get people blocked if they aren't followed, and therefore the ranking system pages aren't quite appropriate as a "policy." Double hrm. Leave it to a woman to muddle up my brain.  :-]    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   01:49, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Glad to be of service! Oh and Page ranking is also a voluntary scheme..  Яєdxx Actions Words 02:40, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Deletions

Oh, sorry! I've been to known to be over-expeditive at times ;-) I see why not deleting them may seem like a good option. On the other hand, was removing them from the "Other Songs" in violation of any other policy? I don't see why the misspells should be kept there. CharlesDexterWard 07:30, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Replace the misspelt lyrics with a redirect to the correct spelling, then you can remove them from the other songs list. Otherwise they will just keep getting added if you delete them or only remove them from the other songs list. - ezekiel000 08:31, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Removing the songs from the Other Songs list isn't against any policy. I just wanted you to be aware of the pretty strict deletions policy that we have. I didn't want you adding a bunch of templates, when adding the Redirects are actually easier, and are the best solution. (On occasion, one of our bots goes looking for lyrics at some of the other sites. If we don't have an existing page for their spelling/punctuation, then the bot creates it here. If we delete such a page, then it will only be created next time. We don't do this bot-search very often since 1)most other sites have horribly inaccurate lyrics and 2)it causes a bunch of clean-up work in the Other Songs sections and 3)our contributors do a pretty great job of adding new albums and their lyrics as they come out that we really don't need to!) Thanks for joining us at LyricWiki, and if you ever have a question about something, please feel free to ask me here. Even if I don't get to it right away, the admins' talk pages are watched by quite a few people and nice people such as Ezekiel000 will show up and help.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   21:37, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Split albums

(I already asked here but I suppose it dropped off your watchlist…) Should split albums have their artists in the pagename or not? Currently we have a mix of both. Or should we let it depend on whether the artists are shown on the sleeve? — 6×9 (Talk) 13:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Two Things...

Hey Kiefer! Thanks for your kind words. =)

Now, about the "amp;" thing: I really have no clue about what you're talking about. It must probably be something my browser (Firefox) is doing automatically... Can you give me a pratical example? Where did you find the mistake? Maybe it'll help me understand why Firefox is doing this. O__O

Hope to hear from you soon!

[edit] edit to spongebob wikia

Hi, first of all I'd like to make an appology because the message I sent about the spongebob wiki was aggresive. I didn't mean to be angry, I was just upset. also, thank you very much for sorting out the issue. If you have any other consernes please send me a message, Thank you! --Jleer 23:48, September 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] About: Increasing frustration

Do you use firefox? Try to open links in a new tab by pressing CTRL while clicking on the link. If that isn't possible you may also want to try Tab Mix Plus. This CTRL even works with the history. - Chris 23:13, October 4, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Question regarding Phish's artist page

Currently the artist page for Phish has 125 songs under the "Other Songs" heading. These are songs that have only appeared on the band's live releases. There are dozens of official live releases that include these songs, however I'm aware that the LyricWiki rules state that artist pages should not be over inflated, and adding so many live releases could potentially violate this rule. However, the rules also state that the number of songs under the "Other Songs" heading should be minimal. Therefore, the two rules seem to contradict themselves in the case of Phish (and probably jam bands in general).

I'm personally of the opinion that since the live music of Phish is an integral part of their sound, their many live albums should start to be added. However I'm a relative newbie to the site and I don't feel it's my place to make such a decision without first counseling someone of authority. Should I start adding their live releases or leave the "Other Songs" category as it is?

Thanks for your help :)

Tds418 00:04, October 10, 2009 (UTC)

Adding the many unofficial live recordings to the page would indeed clog the page, and therefore make it less useful for conveying the information that is most needed by most users. Phish is kind of a special case, though, I must admit. They have so many songs that (I'm assuming from what I've heard) aren't on official albums, that perhaps a second "Phish/Bootleg Albums" page might be necessary. Usually, however, all that is needed to "clear" the Other Songs section is to create another song list above the Other Songs headed as "Songs Performed Live". The problem is that only songs that are confirmed to have been performed by the band live should be placed there. Adding a note such as (Performed 10/15/97 in San Jose, CA, among others) after the song will help with clarifying the situation, but isn't really required.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:13, October 11, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your input. To clarify, the live recordings I was referring to are not unofficial but released by the band themselves (a list of the releases can be found here). I can start to move the songs to a "Songs Performed Live" section, but the problem I see with that is that it will just become another very long list of songs. Your idea of a second page titled Phish/Bootleg Albums (or Phish/Live Phish Releases may be a more apt name) may be the best solution. Tds418 19:35, October 11, 2009 (UTC)
It does sounds like that might be the best solution. If you need assistance with an issue, feel free to ask here or in the Community Portal. Good luck with the project!    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   03:31, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SOTD

Dear Bearcat,

Can you help me out please? I haven't got a 'puter atm. It's been taken away for a comedical as it is a little sick. I am hoping to get it back in about a week, but until then can you take care of the SOTD please? I have made a few changes (improvements?) whilst I have been sitting in the SOTD seat, and to help me get my head round the "of the days" and "of the weeks" when I was covering for Will I wrote a few notes. These notes reflect all the changes I have made and I still use them to check I've done everything that needs doing.

I guess if my 'puter was going to go wrong it is well timed because I am very busy atm trying to sort out, amongst other things like antiques, etc., my 200 plus vinyl record collection that has been in my back garden for over a year now and in my former home's back garden for even longer ...GRRRRRR...(I'm sure you recall me saying about my circumstances) so tragically ALL the sleeves and covers have rotted away.

I don't mind admitting that I felt physical pain throwing all these covers into the refuse bin, not least because they were of course all originals, e.g.The Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971), etc. etc. etc. Some, like Led Zep's The Song Remains The Same (1976) also included booklets, complete with concert photographs , Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies (1973) had a large billion dollar bill, and some were just very pretty like Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band's Against The Wind (1980) (with artwork by Jim Warren) and my Yes, Uriah Heep and Budgie album covers (with artwork by Roger Dean).

If further proof was ever needed of HWCBN's (He Who Cannot Be Named) insanity, and indeed my incompatibility with him, then no one need look further than this. It is criminal that he should've put such treasures in the garden to rot. But he did. Men! (Rfl) No, you AREN'T all the same. In fact no-one is anything remotely like him. They couldn't even come close. Just not possible (obviously). Sorry about that. I digress and my karma is becoming seriously unbalanced.

Anyway, I hope you is OK. Hope everyone is Ok. I'm thinking of you all and I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail, i.e. just as soon as. And yes 6, that's a promise not a threat ;). Things may have gone a bit awry in the move but you don't get rid of me quite that easily ;) I will however be hoping that the rename/contributions problem is sorted out by the time I return (it can't be left as it is...) and for all our sakes, and the good of the site, that the lines of communication are better defined...

Яєdxx Actions Words 16:01, October 19, 2009 (UTC) (aka Sandy)

Bearcat are you ignoring me (again ..lol)?
No worries. I am still very busy outside the box, but my 'puter is back from the hospital so I'll pick up on SOTD.  Яєdxx Actions Words 21:24, October 23, 2009 (UTC)
Very weird. I didn't even see this. Normally I get that "You have a message" notice when I come on, but I guess I didn't for this one. I didn't get an e-mail either. Something must have gotten crossed. I was wondering where you have been, though. I thought you were just chilling out until a few things got sorted. Glad to see you are back in the land of the computing. I got the new Beatles set, by the way.  :-] I haven't gone through it yet, but perhaps tomorrow. And I'll be LyricWiki-ing at the same time! Peace, my LyricSister! (And did you notice? I'm ME again. Yahoo!)    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   01:05, October 24, 2009 (UTC)
Glad you're back to normal :-) The Lyric thing really didn't suit you. No more than it suits tek...  Яєdxx Actions Words 00:27, November 1, 2009 (UTC)
That's what I thought, too! It appears that things are getting back to "normal" here at LW, especially with Sean back, and involved even more than before! Which is completely and utterly sweet. I really haven't been coming here as often as I should (it seems like I always say that) but my evenings have been busier than usual lately. I still haven't gone through the Beatles catalog yet! 6x9 has been nice enough to switch over my LYRIC-Kiefer Watcher notes to good ol' plain Kiefer for me, though! High fives for 6x9!    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   01:03, November 1, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Moving blog entries

Hey,

indeed, right now there isn't an easy way to move blogs around. This is a known problem and is on our to do list.

I take it you mean moving blogs from LYRIC-Kiefer to Kiefer? I can do that for you in the database. ;) --TOR@Wikia 13:38, October 22, 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the info.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   02:25, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Iyaz:Replay

Hey Kiefer,

I saw you were "prettying" things up a bit at this song, however I think your edits go together with a (imo big) loss of information. Did you listen to the song? The count of repeatings of the "ay" is clearly defined, as well as the "ay!" in the refrain. Your edits do not even remove the exact count of repetitions, they also remove the most important syllable of the whole song. If you listen to the song you should notice how often they inserted "ay!". I really think your edits are sensible regarding the bridge (that girl), but the refrain has been changed too much. But I didn't want to just revert it but thought I'd ask first if you listened to the song, because I think if you do you'll find the repetition isn't just a usual echo/scratch but a wordplay with "stuck". And as they're not fading at all I consider them (key-)elements of this song and wouldn't shorten them out. - Chris 00:54, October 27, 2009 (UTC)

I did listen to it. (Got that particular piece of ear candy stuck in my head today as a consequence.  :-] ) I removed it because I saw it as just an echo effect, and not him actually saying ay-ay-ay-ay, etc., but if you think it's important to the meaning, then please re-add. Not a problem at all. I can totally see where you are coming from.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   02:48, October 27, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah it's really catchy, it played in my mind again and again. Fortunately I've got another song to sing in my mind then. - Chris 20:19, October 27, 2009 (UTC) Nine of ten voices in my head tell me I'm normal. The other one whistles the tetris theme.

[edit] 3 groups with the name 3/Three

Hello Kiefer, The page "Emerson, Lake & Palmer" contained several tracks with a wrong artist. I redirected this songs to "Three" (as spelled in the german wikipedia). The groups "3", listed as "related artist", and "Three" are different artists with the "same" name.

Can you help me by redirecting these pages to a "correct" name?

Three:Chains / Desde La Vida: La Vista / Desde La Vida: Sangre De Toro / Eight Miles High / Lover To Lover / On My Way Home / Runaway / Talkin' Bout / You Do Or You Don't

I hope, you understand my english und know what I mean :-)

Thank you --Passdscho 20:32, November 4, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] You should use the Wikia forum mechanism

...it works way better than a big fat page.

Also, you should have a link to the LyricWiki:Community Portal or the LyricWiki:Help Desk on your sidebar. Currently this wiki is very unfriendly to new users. I'm sure some of this has to do with migration issues, but many of the problems are easily addressed.

Of course you can just tell me to screw off. I'm perfectly willing NOT to help out. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:31 AM PST 12 Nov 2009

As you were writing me, I was writing you, strangely enough! The Community Portal was on the sidebar just a little while ago, but our Fearless Leader, Sean is doing some re-working of things because it was a bit overly-messy (to say the least) over there. I'm sure the Comm. Portal link will be returning shortly. It's an essential part of the system. I'll make a note on Sean's talk page just to make sure. BTW, no reason to screw off. Just go through the proper motions, okay?  :-]    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   02:49, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
Like I said, the wiki is currently in a somewhat new user unfriendly state, so it wasn't clear to me what the "proper motions" were exactly. I had to dig around to find the Community portal and the Help Desk. I wanted to create some forums before asking the community to test if they worked at all. I wasn't sure if the forum mechanism was turned on for all Wikia wikis by default, especially migrated ones. I was going to suggest using the forums after I tested it, but someone commented about the forums in the CreatePage discussion before I had a chance to ask.
I will mention what I've done so far in LyricWiki talk:Community Portal, so people can decide if I'm going the right direction. It seems to me that LyricWiki could use alot of general templates in use at other wikis, but I'll make a list and ask people if they want them or think they would be useful before migrating from now on. I figured if people didn't know about them and they weren't interfering with existing stuff, it would be okay to add. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:42 PM PST 12 Nov 2009
Sounds good.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   17:10, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ringtone ad

Hi, Kiefer! I've just started contributing to this wiki, and I have one doubt. The articles I wrote don't apeear with the ringtone ad before nor after the lyrics. Is it suppose to appear? What should I do so that it appears?

Thanks,

Rafamoretti 21:12, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

You don't do anything, it's a ad system thing. They'll likely appear after a bit.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   21:28, November 16, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Artwork filename format

Thank you for changing the names of the pictures I uploaded to the right ones, sorry, I didn't know about the preferred filename format for albums.

I uploaded another image (Amberian_Dawn_-_Clouds_Northland_Thunder.jpg) and have tried to move it to the right name, but I can't find the "move tab" that is refered in the FAQ, could you move it for me, please?

Thanks
