[edit] Resolutions

OK I'm listening. I recall you once telling me that using percentages in templates etc works better with different screen resoltions than pixels. I feel I need to learn a bit more about this now, seeing as my new monitor is widescreen and about 58cm. (Yes indeed - lol). It takes some getting used to after my 143cm one, that's for sure.

Anyway I want to ensure my user page displays OK for the majority of users, even if not for me. So can you please tell me how to go about this? If you prefer you could simply edit my page, as I'll look and see what you changed afterwards and learn that way. Up to you, but any help gratefully received! Thanks.  Яєdxx Actions Words 01:43, November 3, 2009 (UTC)

The main problem with different resolutions is that peoples screens are different widths. Meaning if you've got an image that is 800px wide, for some people (with a low resolution) it will almost take up the width of the screen, but for others (with a high resolution) it will only go some of the way across. If, for instance, you where creating a column on a page, and you wanted it to be about a third of the width, and you set it to a width of x pixels, because that makes it a third of the width on your screen, then it will be that number of pixels on everyone's screen even if it's bigger/smaller.
You can always "zoom" using firefox with 'ctrl' + '+' (control key and plus key). 'ctrl' + '-' will zoom out and ctrl+0 will reset your zoom. This basically makes firefox pretend you're using a different resolution. So if you press ctrl++ a few times, you're looking at your page as someone with a smaller resolution would see it. (It actually gives the same effect as dragging in the corner of your browser's window to make it smaller) LYRIC-Humbug wordsdeeds 12:01, November 3, 2009 (UTC)
Ooh, another neat thing I sometimes use is browsershots.org LYRIC-Humbug wordsdeeds 12:03, November 3, 2009 (UTC)
I'm not really having much luck with this but thanks anyway Humbug.  Яєdxx Actions Words 22:38, November 4, 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for the lack of reply… We drove to Straßburg yesterday to see these guys live (amazing… for someone > 70, Daevid Allen has lots of energy… not to mention the silly costumes and the "Nobody knows I'm a lesbian" T-shirt), so I didn't have time for more than a few minor edits here and there. Seems you're in good hands though. Just make sure he doesn't cheat! "Funny… I was sure he had only one queen yesterday…"6×9 (Talk) 12:32, November 4, 2009 (UTC)
Daevid Allen, a man of many talents. Glad you had a good time :-)  Яєdxx Actions Words 22:38, November 4, 2009 (UTC)
Check out Humbug/Resolution. I hope that explains it. LYRIC-Humbug wordsdeeds 06:00, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
Absolutely perfectly ! Thank you :-)  Яєdxx Actions Words 17:38, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Community Portal

The latest entry for the community portal trivia will be three years old in about 2 month. May I edit/change/renew the trivia postings? - Chris 16:07, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead! It doesn't look like it's meant to be admin-only. — 6×9 (Talk) 18:45, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Nice! (I just removed the "needs to be updated" message, since it isn't true anymore.) — 6×9 (Talk) 14:17, November 7, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Laggy?

Is the server lagging for you too? It's incredibly hard to work like that =\ - Chris 10:53, November 8, 2009 (UTC)

Yep, sometimes pages show up at once, sometimes it takes ages. I guess it's because GracenoteBot is at it again, creating pages at warp speed… — 6×9 (Talk) 11:07, November 8, 2009 (UTC)
I supposed him to be the reason. Hm, well, as I am editing anyways, could tell me since when the Hometown-Cats are hidden? - Chris 11:17, November 8, 2009 (UTC)
Approximately since WP-Flag was created and added to many of them. The idea was to reduce the clutter at the bottom by hiding those categories that are already linked explicitly on the page anyway (ht, genres, labels, released). — 6×9 (Talk) 11:35, November 8, 2009 (UTC)
Thanks :) - OK, it was just confusing no categories showed up after entering the information about state and hometown.
Next question (this is getting Chris' QA-post^^): David Guetta:Sexy Chick is the "clean" (censored) version of David Guetta:Sexy Bitch (great tune btw, check out the yt-video link^^). Is there any template for that relationship? I looked through Category:Templates but couldn't find any fitting at once, but maybe I didn't look close enough. - Chris 12:03, November 8, 2009 (UTC)
There's a setting in user preferences that'll let you see what's hidden – in a separate section, so it's still less cluttered.
I'm not aware of any template. You can put the info directly on the page, or create one. Might be worth it – there are probably lots of clean versions around, with Top 40 radio having become so squeamish and terrified of concerned parents. Ah, those were the days when they would play stuff like "Bobby Brown" (though that was probably because no one in Germany knew what any of it meant at the time). — 6×9 (Talk) 12:17, November 8, 2009 (UTC)
LOl. Laggy? Yes indeed.  Яєdxx Actions Words 04:37, November 10, 2009 (UTC)

We can't put all the blame on G-Bot – lots of laggishness right now how's this for a new word, Red? and no bot in sight. — 6×9 (Talk) 16:25, November 10, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] File:Surrender.gif Flag needed

So that if someone forgets to delete SongFooter on translated sub page, the page doesn't get addded inappropriately to Category:Pages Needing Song Template, i.e. [1]  Яєdxx Actions Words 04:37, November 10, 2009 (UTC)

The proper way to remove them from the category is not to change the template, but to delete the SongFooter. This way we can at least find these pages (though we'll miss those with both templates still present). — 6×9 (Talk) 05:16, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
The last argument you brought up yourself is why I think it might really be more helpful to create categories. The SongFooter could easily be adjusted using your in the TranslatedSong template, it then would look like this:
(old code)...#if:NAMESPACE||{{
#if:{}...(old code)
You know which part I mean? Exactly puts wrong pages either into Category:Pages Needing Song Template or Category:SongFooter on Translation Page respectivly even into Category:Song Templates on Translation Page. - Chris 21:45, November 10, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Changes in iTunes Link Maker?

Have you noticed that iT link, generated by current iTLM, and it's description in our help and ArtistFooter docs particulary, doesn't match anymore?

Compare:

 • Help: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=abdf56d (put only the part in bold)
 • iTLM: http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/<artist-name>/idabdf56d

That wouldn't be worth to mention, if all *f.iTs were working. But I just found several cases (10_K.A.N.'s, 100._Debija) with af.iT's, filled perfectly but leading to some strange xml error pages though. Remembering those "invalid" 3-dots-@start-pages, I'm not sure if these links aren't working only for me again, or we have some iTLM bug here. Question was inspired by Lwt, after walking through af-asin, akuma & mb, now champing at the bit to make the same on af.iT. --Senvaikis (talk) 20:37, November 10, 2009 (UTC)

Yep, I'd noticed. It started a few days ago, I think. At first the links still worked, but a few hours ago I tried to add some album itunes, and the links only led me to the generic "trying to find itunes" page. I'm afraid we might need to adjust the templates… I'd better let Sean know. — 6×9 (Talk) 20:42, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I'll try to slow down the eagerness of Lwt then :)--Senvaikis (talk) 21:23, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
