[edit] Suggest Something! :)

  • Import lyrics from Jamendo There is a plugin to Amarok so it is possible somehow... --Stardust85 22:40, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
  • Make the bot automatically (or on demand) insert complete discographies of artists. Right now if someone wants to organize an artist's page, they have to do it all manually (see Negativland - half the discography missing, most songs are filed under Other, and organizing would take hours.
  • Display on the site the most popular lyric each day and have an archived list of this elsewhere on the site (similar to Song of the Day, but using unique visits instead of basing it on nominations - this could easily be called Lyric of the Day)
  • Überbot should learn how to spell umlauts like ä, ö, ü... (noticed it in various German texts) especially becaus its name includes Ü ;-). Should be only a correction from ASCII to ANSI or even to Unicode...
  • Link to album names and song names on Wikipedia, in addition to artist names (thanks for doing that already)
  • Link songs to iTunes Music Store or/and AllOfMP3 so we can hear samples (this tool might help -- or not! -- generate ITMS links; AllOfMP3 URLs such as [1] can probably be harvested by an L33T bot like you ;-)
    • Another source of samples could be last.fm, there's usually a fair bit of info there too and they're not trying to sell you so much.
      • I'd vote for last.fm over iTunes. all their stuff operates on open-source principles, it seems. perhaps a deal could be struck with last.fm? cross promotion? that would be cool --naught101 05:20, 5 August 2006 (PDT)
        • On a side-note, Last.fm was acquired by CBS, so the open-source side of it is questionable from now on. --213.237.66.155 09:41, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
  • Perhaps ÜberBot could start ripping lyrics from lyrc.com.ar? >:) they have lots of stuff, but it's not editable. perhaps talk to them about it, they might like the idea. also, ripping discographies from wikipedia? they are often pretty comprehensive, albeit not very consitently arranged, and some have comments. lyrc.com.ar would be easier to rip from in that sense.. --Naught101 07:17, 5 August 2006 (PDT)
    • Actually, I'm against any form of automated lyric ripping. I understand it was necessary in the beginning to fill up the database, but there are also a lot of errors now (incorrect lyrics, and even a lot of songs attributed to wrong people). Mischko 11:29, 10 September 2006 (PDT)
  • Simpler templates. Rather than having to type up an albums song on both the artist page and album page, why not only type it on the album page, and have the artist page get its information from that. Ask me if you need that explained better. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by STAYS (talk).
I also think that this is a good idea, people would have a reason to fill in the album pages. Many people fill out only the artist page because it is the minimum necessary to have it 'work'. I am guilty of this myself (just look at Move).
This could be done using template inclusion, but it it rather messy. It needs manually placed <noinclude> and <includeonly> tags in the album page for this to work. I do not want Uberbot to do this, that would be more processing than is needed. I could see this being an extention so that you can put {{#album: AyumiHamasaki:LOVEppears (1999)}} on a single line to have it expand the album page correctly, include only the artwork, and track listing, generating the title for the album and ignore other sections such as the external links.
This way, the user can fill in the album page and include it in the artist's page. This also allows all the artists on compilations to have that album listed on the artist page. But mostly I see this as reducing the amount of redundant information we have.
I tried to do this with what the wiki already supports over in the Sandbox, but it does not work quite right and requires the album page to have a <noinclude> tags after the track listing.
- Teknomunk 07:17, 27 September 2006 (PDT)
  • Erase all the blank spaces in the start of lines between <lyric></lyric> tags
  • Look for articles in Songs (Song_A...) categories that have no <lyric> tag, and put them in an Category such as lyrickize (:P)
For the pages that use the old format (spaces at the beginning of lines), it could just automatically convert to the new format. -Sean Colombo
I will have User:Janitor take care of this after he finished up with the artist pages. - teknomunk 23:54, 19 November 2006 (EST)
  • Same as above but with pages with no Song or Songfooter template
  • If there is no special page for that (i think wikipedia there is). Look for all pages with no Categories and put them in a Uncategorized category or something --Unaiaia (talk) 13:53, 14 November 2006 (EST)
  • I've seen this twice, so, I'm not sure if it happened in some ÜberBot work, what i saw is that some Artist pages have the song names wrongly written, look at my lst edition in Fokofpolisiekar. I think ÜberBot should search for "[[:" and put "[[{{ARTIST}}:". Maybe and investigation should be done to see if there are many pages with this error. --Unaiaia (talk) 20:06, 16 November 2006 (EST)

  • Add the Temlate {{ArtistHeader}} to all artist-pages that don't have this Template. Fill the parameters of that template from the other templates ({{tl|Hometown, {{Star}} and {{Wikipedia}}) and delete the old templates. Fill the rest of the template from the {{Artist}}-template (MySpace etc.). Set the star to default green, if it was not set before. Also check all existing artist-pages that already have the {{ArtistHeader}}-template if all parameters are set and all old templates are deleted. Acccept 22:12, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Covers

Brought it up on the main page, but it belongs here. We should link all covers back to the original song, and then have links to the various covers of songs from the original. Could uberbot compare the lyrics, see how similar they are, and if in a certain range automatically do this based on the date of the album? Or, at the least, he could create a list of songs with the same name that we can methodically go through. Casualsax 05:03, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

I think trying to do it based on the content of the songs might get it wrong a lot of the time. Not sure though. I could definitely have ÜberBot make a list of identical titles though. I'll get on that soon (added it to Future Work). -Sean Colombo 12:26, 15 April 2006 (PDT)

Done with the list of potential covers. Check it out at LyricWiki Possible Song Covers. -ÜberBot 11:28, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Lyric Formatting

Would be great to get support for scandic letters (äöå), if filename has scand, link doesn't seem to work and file is missing scands, its too much work to fix it by hand. For example: Eppu Normaali --84.250.78.87 08:24, 2 May 2006 (PDT)

  • Works fine, it's just the bot that mucked up the formatting. Try looking at Kaizers Orchestra - you just have to go fix the 'wrong' encoding. --Jan
    • NM, I completely misinterpreted the request. --Jan 11:58, 13 May 2006 (CET)

It would be great if we could come up with some standard formatting that the bot could automatically do for us. Like capitalizing the first letter of every line. Casualsax 23:50, 13 April 2006 (PDT)

Yeah, that's a good idea. I've put it in ÜberBot's future work. I was thinking it would be dangerous since there might be cases where capitalizing the first letter would be wrong, but as long as more pages are fixed than are broken by the change (which it seems like there def. would be), then the overall quality of the site goes up. I'll make a page for standards and plop a link to it on your talk page in case you have other ideas for what the formatting should be like. -Sean Colombo 04:33, 14 April 2006 (PDT)

  • Something to worry about on the script for ÜberBot is pages that have already been manually changed to the standard format by users compared pages that haven't been. - LeVirus Watts 20:33, 28 June 2006 (MNT)

Note: See history for discussion with Db0 regarding the other site. It was getting long and appears to be complete.

[edit] Avatar

Wouldn't it be nice to have an avatar for every user? I am new to writing stuff in wiki-style and don't know if it's common to have such things on your user page. Or should you use simply the regular way to upload the file? Maybe it's better to setup an image in preferences so that you don't mix it up with the other images of covers? Eagle 20.06.2006

[edit] Foreign Artist Names

Some foreign artist names don't follow the "The" naming scheme either. Examples are "Aerzte, Die" which should be "Die Ärzte" and "Toten Hosen, Die" which should be "Die Toten Hosen". It would be great if those could be converted automatically just like artist with "The" in their name. I don't know if you can do something about umlauts in an automated fashion, but it would be cool to at least have some way to tell ÜberBot to "batch rename" pages -Florob 09:40, 18 September 2006 (PDT)

ÜberBot already has this functionality. You can request batch moves at Requests For Moves. However will probably need to nudge Sean Colombo to get it moved.
- Teknomunk 11:41, 18 September 2006 (PDT)
Ah thanks, I didn't see this before.
- Florob 13:02, 18 September 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Second Batch of lyrics

After looking over the lyrics being inserted by uberbot, I found a formatting error. When the song is part of an album, uberbot correctly added a {{Song|<<album name>>|<<artist name>>}} to the song page, but if the album is not known, no such tag is added when it should have a {{Song||<<artist name>>}} so that a link back to the artist is provided. Just letting you know. - Teknomunk 16:49, 2 October 2006 (PDT)

Wow, good catch :). It's fixed now so all songs from here out should work with that. -Sean Colombo 17:03, 2 October 2006 (PDT)
No problem. This was why I wanted the automatically inserted songs flagged, so that this type of thing could be found.
- Teknomunk 18:32, 2 October 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Formatting Issues again

Hi, i just recently joined here and have been trying to format songs i include in the proposed format (with lyric-tag and footer). I also edited some songs when i found them to be formated incorrectly. Now i stumbled upon lyrics created by this fine little bot - but they don't comply to the format rules. Check it out on this example: compared versions Any chance to fix that? --Aylorion 08:59, 18 October 2006 (PDT)

It looks like that was ÜberBot's first batch of lyrics which was done before getting the current formatting hammered down. For now we have to update the formatting manually. A bot script may be written to update the formatting, but it probably won't happen for a while.
And welcome, it's always good to see new people around here.
- Teknomunk 09:14, 18 October 2006 (PDT)
Thanks for the welcome :) I guess i will leave those older ÜberBot pages untouched, because it might be easier to get another bot to change the format then. See you around --Aylorion 01:14, 19 October 2006 (PDT)

[edit] Automated Creation Comment

Your additions to the LyricWiki database, if they are songs that link to a multiword artist, have underscores in said links. Can you not do that? It looks kind of, frankly, dumb. --Tuvok^Talk|Contribs 22:49, 8 December 2006 (EST)

Eventually Sean, the bot's creator, will read this and this will not be a problem with lyrics when (if) more lyrics are added automatically. If you come across pages formatted the way you described, you are more than welcome to fix them.
- teknomunk 22:57, 8 December 2006 (EST)
As I suspected. Thanks! I hope others will join in the effort to fix this minor but visually annoying bug. --Tuvok^Talk|Contribs 22:59, 8 December 2006 (EST)
Any time UberBot sees a page with those underscores, he removes them now. That should make the whole site fairly uniform and make everything much less confusing (and ugly) for everyone. The more intimidating markup there is on the pages, the less likely newcomers are to feel comfortable editing methinks.
Thanks for bringing this up,
-Sean Colombo 23:29, 17 October 2007 (EDT)

[edit] Neil Diamond:Hooked On A Feeling

This page needs to be deleted because Neil Diamond never did this song. He didn't even write it. It was done by B.J. Thomas, who already has a page for this song at B.J. Thomas:Hooked On A Feeling. The song was written by Mark James, best known for writing Suspicious Minds. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by RSLitman (talkcontribs).

[edit] Capitalization

Okay, ÜberBuddy, what's up with the capitalization? I had to rollback your edits to Cage because you uncapped a letter that was supposed to be capped and capped another that there was no need to, since it was in the visual display section. If you need capitalization guidelines, there's always LW:PN to look at, or you can ask me on my talk page!  :- ]    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   23:22, 17 October 2007 (EDT)

[edit] A Change in Tack About Other Songs?

I noticed Uberbot stopped removing the linked Other Songs pages, and instead marked them for simple deletion, warning that the user must also delete the link. I'd have to say I thought the old way (sending the Other Songs page to the orphaned pages, and deleting the link) worked just fine. Any reasons for the change?
King_Nee1114lyrics 01:14, 7 December 2007 (EST)

I don't think this is an UberBot task, if I recall, that's something Janitor is taking care of.
-Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 13:21, 7 December 2007 (EST)
I knew that. Sorry, apparently I was asleep when I posted that. I'll talk to teknomunk about this question...
King_Nee1114lyrics 13:42, 7 December 2007 (EST)
I have had nothing to do with any changes in the past week, I've been to busy to even think about making changes to Janitor (dead week). I think this was being done by The Light6 (talk contribs). When I have a chance, I need to to a major overhaul of Janitor (make it fix any and all mistakes for pages it comes across, including this type of thing.
- teknomunk (talk,E,) 15:01, 7 December 2007 (EST)
I don't think that the template has changed the way Janitor removes Other Songs page links from Artist pages, has it? The template has just been changed to include the Other Songs page to a listing under Category:Requests For Deletion/Other Songs pages. Usually, I think the pattern goes like this:
  1. ÜberBot grabs new lyrics that go onto the Orphaned list
  2. Janitor takes the new, orphaned lyrics and slaps them onto the artist's Other Songs list
  3. If the Other Songs list has a link in the header, Janitor removes the link
  4. This sends the Other Songs list to the Orphaned list
  5. This newly orphaned Other Songs page gets deleted by an admin
But if ÜberBot never finds lyrics by these incredibly minor artists, then the Other Songs link is never removed by Janitor. I think The Light6 (talk contribs) is trying to add the template to all of these Other Songs pages so that they are listed under Category:Requests For Deletion/Other Songs pages and can eventually be dealt with.    Kiefer    talk    contribs    admin   15:47, 7 December 2007 (EST)
If it would save some time, and someone has sufficient interest in it, I could do a database-query to find all of the "Other Songs" pages and create a list of them which either UberBot or someone else could go through and delete.
-Sean Colombo (talk|contribs) 15:54, 7 December 2007 (EST)
This particular week is bad for me to do anything, with this being the final 2 weeks of school. But if someone would want to go through writing a bot to remove the link from artists, I would delete songs from lonelypages. I have some minibots of my own that make that part a lot quicker.

[edit] Ubot doubles iTunes parameter in song footer

If song footer contains (empty) iTunes parameter, Ubot adds one more instead of filling egsisting one. Maybe it's not very bad, but anyway - a bug.--Senvaikis (talk) 15:52, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

[edit] LyricWiki:Song of the Day

Hi ÜberBot!
K well it's like this, as you know I meddle. I currently have over 7,000 pages on my watchlist, one of which is the above. Now I know you do an absolutely superb job of looking after the SOTD pages (together with a number of others), but I am curious as to know why after a song has been SOTD, the text suddenly becomes italicised.

Since I believe the correct way to format album names is to italicise them, a lot of the time I have correctly formatted the links (e.g. album names in italics, song names in speech marks, etc.) when the entries were sitting in the nominations section. But of course because of this italicising malarky, when the entry hits the aforementioned page it's all back to front! I adjust these manually whenever I visit the page, but I was wondering if there is anything you can do to prevent this from happening?
Luv  ♫Яєdxx Actions Words 05:03, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
