[edit] Grammar Lessons

OK people, here are two lessons in grammar and lexicography for you:

[edit] Plural Possessives

taken from here

Most plural nouns already end in s. To create their possessive, simply add an apostrophe after the s:

  • The Pepins' house is the big blue one on the corner.
  • The lions' usual source of water has dried up.
  • The gases' odors mixed and became nauseating.
  • The witches' brooms were hidden in the corner.
  • The babies' beds were all in a row.

[edit] Coldplay

In this song, since he says something like "en-nem-eez-aiz" he must be singing about plural enemies. They own multiple eyes each, so the correct orthography is:

enemies' eyes

[edit] Dictionary Definitions

It is important to distinguish in writing two words that most people (myself included) do not enunciate clearly:

[edit] cav·al·ry - kav-uhl-ree

taken from here
  1. Military.
    1. the part of a military force composed of troops that serve on horseback.
    2. mounted soldiers collectively.
    3. the motorized, armored units of a military force organized for maximum mobility.
  2. horsemen, horses, etc., collectively.

-Origin: 1585–95; syncopated var. of cavallery < It cavalleria, deriv. of cavaliere cavalier-

[edit] Cal·va·ry - kal-vuh-ree

taken from here
  1. Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified. Luke 23:33.
  2. (often lowercase) a sculptured representation of the Crucifixion, usually erected in the open air.
  3. (lowercase) an experience or occasion of extreme suffering, esp. mental suffering.

-Origin: < LL Calvāria Calvary < L calvāria a skull, used to translate Gk kraníon cranium, itself a trans. of the Aramaic name; see Golgotha-

(Dictionary.com even notes the common transposition of pronunciation between these two words on their page for irrelevant.)
