Elliott Smith is an often forgotten and generally underrated artist who lived a tragic, pain-filled life. Though he didn't take much from this world, he gave the world beautiful, heartfelt music. Sadly, time washes away his memory, and the meaning of his music. "Miss Misery" is the most famous of his songs, written for the movie Good Will Hunting, earning him a nomination at the Oscars. He lost to "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion, from the Titanic soundtrack. Music video on YouTube
This band is hands down awesome. It's amazing how they have three guitarists, but they play in such harmony that this doesn't result in sounding just like a lot of guitar noise. The lyrics of this song are beautiful too. But despite all of this, Acid never made the charts and fell apart in obscurity after only 3 or 4 years together. They finally broke up one year ago today, on September 26th, 2008.
So I would like to nominate this, one of their greatest songs, as a tribute to not only Acid, but to all epic bands that just don't make it to the spotlight. Music video on YouTube
Being a huge huge huge David Bowie fan, this song means a lot to me. It always makes me happy when I've had the worst day. :) The fabulous sax solo at the end is performed by Bowie himself. Music video on YouTube
I recently met an old friend again. I haven't seen him for a long while, but it was like we were back in time. For all those who found a real friend... Music video on YouTube
Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970), influenced a number of musicians, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of "Little Wing" is one of the best, if not the best, Hendrix tributes. There are no lyrics, but Stevie Ray's guitar playing is pure, raw emotion. Music video on YouTube
This song, although not as popular as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Come As You Are" off the 1991 album Nevermind, is a strong ballad that still has a great meaning to it. The song is about a man who, after the death of his girlfriend, turns to religion "as a last resort to keep himself alive. To keep him from suicide". Kurt Cobain said of the song "I've always felt that some people should have religion in their lives [. . .] That's fine. If it's going to save someone, it's okay. And the person in ['Lithium'] needed it." Audio on GoEarMusic video on YouTube
Even with the song's lyrics speaking of heartbreak and betrayal, "I Can See For Miles" still manages to stay slightly upbeat, with anyone being able to sing along to the chorus. This song, #258 in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time and covered by many other artists (including Tina Turner and Styx), has remained the top selling single for The Who in the United States since its release. It has also featured in many ads and commercials. A great song! Music video on YouTube
"Lawyers, Guns, and Money" is one of the many examples of Warren Zevon's genius. To many he's said to be an underrated artist, unheard of by mainstream. It may be what gives songs like this it's charm, or maybe because their just wonderfully written. Music video on YouTube
Preferred Date: September 3, 2009. The first lyric of the song is "It was the 3rd of September..." although User:Redxx tells me that this version starts "It is the 12th of September..." ;)
In recognition of 9/9/9 and the releases of the digital remasters of the Beatles catalog yesterday, today's Song of the Day features a Beatles' classic: "Hey Jude". "Hey Jude" is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, with its inspiring lyrics and landmark melody. It also broke the time barrier for radio; no other recording was so popular and exceeded a 3-4 minute length. No one can deny that this song is one of the best in history. I'm looking forward to seeing the greatest band in history's legacy live on for another 40 years! Music video on YouTube
I'd like to nominate this song to honor the anniversary of Hughie Thomasson's death today. I've become familiar with The Outlaws in recent months, and Hughie will, with no doubt, be missed. Green grass and high tides forever. Music video on YouTube
Lyrically, Say Goodbye is about a relationship that goes wrong, and is ended. And now, for the first time, he feels "alive", now that he's said "goodbye". This is one of my favourite's by Prom Queen. It never gets old. Check out the music video or song. Either one will be rewarding.
Preferred Date: September 3, 2009. I'm performing this piece in music class on this day.
