Introduction
To help give users a consistent experience on the site, this page outlines the standard format for a Song page, an example of which can be found here: Elton John:Your Song.
Song Page Format
The Song page consists of four major sections:
- Song template
- Lyrics
- Additional song information, e.g. credits, awards, etc. (optional, but highly encouraged)
- SongFooter template (external links)
A number of additional templates may be used on Song pages, such as Song Info, Cover, Covered, Parody, Other Media, Wikipedia, No.1, Billboard Hits, Translation, Awards, etc.
Template
The following is a generic template of how the Song page is formatted, including some optional sections. The portions marked in green should be replaced with the correct information.

|
Title Guidelines
- Capitalize the first letter of every word in the artist's name, the album's name and the song's name. (For more information about LyricWiki's page naming guidelines see LyricWiki:Page Names).
Song Template
The Song template is used to begin the page with a link to the Album page(s) on which the song exists, as well as to the Artist's page. Its basic form follows this format:
{{Song|Name Of Album (Year)|Name Of Artist|star=Colour}}
Example:
{{Song|Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)|The Beatles|star=Green}}
Result:
Artist Name
If the artist's page name differs from the official name due to our page naming policy or for disambiguation, you can change the display text using the alias parameter.
Example:
{{Song||K.d. Lang|alias=k.d. lang|star=Green}}
Result:
Multiple Album Appearances
The album on which the song originally appeared should always be listed before the artist parameter in the {{Song}} template, but for songs that appear on multiple albums, two further albums can be added after the artist parameter. by adding album2 and album3 parameters. Important: Albums entered should be listed in chronological order.
Example:
{{Song|Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)|The Beatles|album2=Anthology 1 (1995)|album3=1 (2000)|star=Green}}
Result:
For more than two additional albums, please use the {{AddAlb}} template.
Album Type
The Song template may also include a designation of the album type. For multiple album appearances type2 and type3 can be added after album2 and album3 respectively. Any type can be entered, but "soundtrack" and "compilation" have a special function. See {{Song}} for more information about this parameter.
Page Ranking Stars
Song pages are also ranked by their level of completion. This displays as a coloured star at the top of the Song page. The ranking commences with Green but after preliminary checking, the parameter |star= in the Song template should be upgraded to Bronze. Silver and Gold mean that someone has elected to be the {{Watcher}} of the page. Violet is a colour reserved for pages with special needs.
- For instructions on how to rank Song pages, see: Help:Page ranking/Songs.
- For additional information about LyricWiki's Page Ranking system see: LyricWiki:Page ranking.
Featured Artists
Up to six featured artists can be added by using the parameters |fa, |fa2, |fa3 ... |fa6.
Example:
{{Song|Late Registration (2005)|Kanye West|fa=Talib Kweli|fa2=Q-Tip|fa3=Common|fa4=Rhymefest|fa5=Jamie Foxx|star=Green}}
Result:
This song is performed by Kanye West, appears on the album Late Registration (2005) and features Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Common, Rhymefest and Jamie Foxx.
- For a full list of available parameters in the Song template and their functions, see the template's documentation page.
Cover and Covered Songs
Cover
If the song is a cover of another artist's original, then the Cover template should be placed after the Song template. This will provide a link to the original song's page.
The format for the Cover template is:
{{Cover|<<The Original Artist>>|<<Title Of The Original Version>> (if different)}}
Covered
If the song is the original recording and it has subsequently been covered by another artist, the Cover2 template should be used instead.
The format for the Cover2 template is:
{{Cover2|<<The Covering Artist>>|<<Title Of The Cover Version>> (if different)}}
If has been covered by more than one other artist, the {{Covered}} template should instead be used. This template produces a collapsible list of artists who have covered the song. See the template page for further information.
Parody Template
If the song is a parody of another song, the Parody template should be added after the {{Song}} template.
The format for the Parody template is:
{{Parody
|Artist = <<The Parodied Artist>>
|Title = <<The Original Song Title>>
}}
"Weird Al" Parody Template
Due to the number of parodies by "Weird Al" Yankovic, there is a separate template for his parodies. See "White & Nerdy" for an example.
The format for the "Weird Al" Parody template is:
{{WAY-Parody|<<The Parodied Artist>>|<<The Original Song Title>>}}
For "Weird Al"'s "style parodies" of an artist, rather than of a specific song, the second parameter can be omitted. See "Dare To Be Stupid" (a style parody of Devo) for an example.
Other Media Templates
There are a number of different templates that can be added to the song page to show other media that the song has featured in. These templates should be added after the Song template and are as follows:
- {{AnimeFeature}}
- {{GameFeature}}
- {{GameFeatureDLC}}
- {{MovieFeature}}
- {{TV Advert}}
- {{TV Series}}
Badges
Several templates are available which display badges in the top right corner of the lyric box. These templates should always be placed directly above the <lyrics> tag, in the following order. These templates are as follows:
- {{youtube embed}} - to embed a YouTube video
- {{SOTD}} – for songs that have been LyricWiki Song of the Day
- {{No.1}} – for songs that have been number-one hits on any country's major pop chart
- {{B-Hits}} – for songs that have been Top 20 Billboard Hits in the US
- {{WP-Song}} – for songs that have an article on Wikipedia
See Manfred Mann's Earth Band:Blinded By The Light for an example that includes all five badges. For complete information on how to use them, see the respective templates' pages.
Lyrics
Some standards for lyrics:
- Lyrics must be wrapped in <lyrics>...</lyrics> tags. This produces a box around the lyrics, such as
- The lyrics should always be transcribed as sung and reflect what is sung on the recording -- including repeating any even if these differ from the "official" lyrics published in the liner notes or elsewhere.
- In general, capitalize the first letter of each line and use minimal end-of-line punctuation, plus any other punctuation needed for clarity's sake. Leave a blank line between stanzas.
- Repeated lines, stanzas, refrains, etc. should be included in full, rather than using notations such as "repeat," "4x," or "chorus." It is also not necessary to add notations such as "instrumental break."
- If it is considered necessary to include notations within the <lyrics> tags, such as the parts sung by the individual performers in a duet, or to indicate that part of the song is "spoken", these notations should be entered immediately above the relevant section and be in bold text:
Crazy
Toys in the attic, I am crazy
Truly gone fishing
- Please don't add fancy formatting within the <lyrics> tags by using HTML tags such as <div>. This presents problems to users who access our lyrics through script plug-ins, which display these tags as plain text.
Instrumentals
For songs with absolutely no sung or spoken lyrics, the {{Instrumental}} template should be inserted between the <lyrics> tags. This produces:
Multiple Languages
For songs released in more than one language see Help:Multiple Languages
Translations/Romanizations
For translations of songs recorded in a language other than English, see Help:Translations.
For romanizations, see Help:Romanization.
Additional Song Information
The following sections may not apply to every song and are optional. They may be used however, to provide additional information about the song.
To create a header for each section, surround the header title with two equals signs on each side.
Example: ==Credits==
These sections should be placed after the lyrics section, but before the external links.
Credits
It is polite to add the credits of the song onto each page, so this section is used to attribute the song to its authors:
- Music and lyrics by
- Musicians (vocals, guitar, drums, ...)
If the composer, lyricist, or credited musicians have an Artist page, please provide a link to this if a link does not already exist elsewhere on the song page, e.g. in the {{Song}}, {{cover}} templates, etc..
Awards
Information about a song's awards can be placed under this heading using the {{Award}} template. See "Carole King:You've Got A Friend" for an example.
Trivia
Additional facts about the song can go in this section. Please be concise -- keep in mind that links to Wikipedia and other sites may be on the page for anyone interested in further details about an song.
Interpretations
Common interpretations of songs can be put here. Interpretations and trivia about the artist or the album the song appears on should go on the appropriate Artist or Album pages.
The {{SongFooter}} template categorizes the song. It also provides parameters for linking to many external services that provide additional information about the song. This is the preferred method of creating these links, as ordering and formatting are consistent across all songs. See "Boston:More Than A Feeling" for an example.
SongFooter Template Example:
{{SongFooter
|fLetter = The first letter of the song title
|artist = Artist name
|album = Album name
|song = Song name
|language = Language name in English
|goear = 7b0995a
|asin = B000657NVS
|iTunes = i=48627033&id=48627047
|musicbrainz = 5698b33c-eada-493e-ba34-636acc149cf8
|allmusic = t90433
|download = http://www.example.com/SongName.mp3
}}
- The only parameters that must be completed are song, fLetter and language. All the other parameters are optional.
- The only exception is instrumentals: if an {{Instrumental}} template is present on the page, the language parameter will be ignored and can therefore be omitted.
- Unlike {{Song}}, the song and album parameters in {{SongFooter}} don't have to follow LyricWiki's page naming rules.
Artist Parameter
The |artist = parameter only needs to be included when the capitalization of the artist name is different from the LyricWiki:Page Names standard. This is most commonly the case with group names containing "and the," such as Derek and the Dominos.
Album Parameter
The |album = parameter only needs to be included in either of these two instances:
- When the capitalization of the album name is different from the LyricWiki:Page Names standard.
- When links to Amazon, iTunes, etc., should indicate a different album than the one on which the song was first released. An example of this would be a song originally released on a limited-issue EP or album, and then later released on an album with much wider distribution.
fLetter Parameter
The following guidelines apply to the |fLetter = parameter:
- The very first letter should always be used, even if the first word is A, An, or The. Example: for The it would be
fLetter=T - If the first letter is a number, then use:
fLetter=0-9 - If the first letter is a symbol (like ";", "(", "-", "*", or "$"), then use:
fLetter=Symbol - If the first letter is a character in a non-Latin alphabet such as Cyrillic, Greek, etc., or is an "accented" character such as Á, Ö, or Ç, use the true fLetter character, not
fLetter=Symbol - If the first letter is a character from a non-Latin writing system that uses symbols for entire words, (Chinese, Japanese, & Korean), then the fLetter is the language of the character. For example:
fLetter=Chinese
Language Parameter
The following guidelines apply to the |language = parameter:
- The language name should be entered in English, i.e.
German, notDeutsch. - If the singer switches between two different languages while performing a song, both languages should be entered in alphabetical order separated by a hyphen, e.g.
English-German,German-Russian. - If an {{Instrumental}} template is present on a song page, the language parameter should be omitted.
For more information on how to complete the various parameters of the SongFooter template and a complete list of parameters that the SongFooter currently accepts, see the documentation on the Template:SongFooter page.
iTunes
An easy way to find the code for the iTunes parameter is to use the iTunes Link Maker. The link should ideally be to the song's original album appearance, and the parameter should be filled out in the following format: i=48627033&id=48627047&s=143444
Songinfo Template
A Song Info template exists that puts a coloured information box on the page, like this:
