Album: John Mayall:Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton (1966)
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Frequently hailed as one of the most influential electric blues albums of all time, it was the album that truly introduced Eric Clapton to the music scene. His guitar playing on John Mayall classics like "Little Girl", "Key to Love", and "Have You Heard" is fantastic. And his explosive solos on "Steppin' Out" rival his later recording of "Crossroads" with Cream. And "Ramblin' On My Mind" was the first time Clapton performed lead vocals. All in all, it's a definite requirement for any music collector.
Album: Hollywood Undead:Swan Songs (2008)
Nominated By: 96.28.208.80
Reason: This is the debut album for one of the next big groups in my opinion. Using masks like Slipknot and lyrics that sound similar to that of Eminem, they are a promising act. Swan Songs clocks in at about 49 minutes. The lyrics are meaningful, and at times funny, and there are some good riffs in here. The album has 14 tracks and they are all amazing. Among the best are "Undead", "No. 5", "Young", and "City", but don't get me wrong the rest is good too. This album is great for a debut. The album is full of great moments. Hollywood Undead are great and I am looking forward to the follow-up album.
Album: Neutral Milk Hotel:In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (1998)
Nominated By: Crocodilewerewolf
Reason: This album is just one of those indie rock gems of the 90s. It seems to resist categorization quite easily, blending dozens of genres together to create a truly mystifying album. At the surface, it's not an easy album to break through: its layers of distortion, out of tune trumpets and even more out of tune vocals can be disconcerting to even the most passionate independent music listener. At its core however lies a beautiful concept: the album paints a picture of all the emotional implications and associations of the life of Anne Frank. It delves deep into a very human subject. It's about Anne Frank, but not really. It took me quite a while to really digest this album, but when I finally did after almost a year of pondering and contemplating its message and musical merits, the experience was indeed deeply rewarding. Though it may divide many indie rock listeners, there is no denying that Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is an album with extraordinary impact and influence.
Album: Cream:Royal Albert Hall London May 2-3-5-6 2005 (2005)
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: The long-awaited Cream reunion was one of the most anticipated concerts of 2005. And it's got everything to satisfy even the smallest Cream fan, including hits like "I'm So Glad", "Crossroads", "White Room", and naturally, "Sunshine of Your Love". The concert also featured the first time the band had played the numbers "Pressed Rat & Warthog" and "Badge" live. It's hard to believe it's been almost five years since the reunion, but the album is still a classic in my collection.
Album: Nick Drake:Five Leaves Left (1969)
Nominated By: Superman Jr.
Reason: Nick Drake died tragically in 1974 at the age of 26 as a result of drug overdose. His struggles with depression often showed in the lyrics to his music. Although he didn't gain much popularity through his three studio albums, his music has since grown in popularity. Five Leaves Left is Drake's first album, containing the beautiful guitar and orchestral sounds of "Day Is Done", "Cello Song", and others.
Album: The Streets:Original Pirate Material (2002)
Nominated By: 91.128.103.113 (= Parsprototo 14:50, November 5, 2009 (UTC) )
Reason: Mike Skinner's debut-album is definitely his best. It shows that there is a British hip-hop and also that it ain't bad. It is about things we all know and can identify with. Starting with the Statement "Turn The Page", after showing some problems of society (i.e. "Geezerz Need Excitement" or "The Irony Of It All"), the album ends with the encouraging song "Stay Positive" - which is full of wisdom. And in fact Mike's right, in such hard times, like now, stay positive. It's all you can do.
Album: Grimus:Panikon (2008)
Nominated By: Duke puccini
Reason: With influences ranging from Radiohead to Porcupine Tree, Placebo, Depeche Mode and Muse, Panikon is the amazing debut album by Transylvanian alternative rockers, Grimus. It has been declared "Best album of 2008" by several Romanian music critics and has already produced several radio hits: "Backseat Driver", "Confused" and "In A Glimpse". Also, "Political Animals" is due to be featured on the soundtrack of an upcoming movie directed by Tudor Giurgiu, one of the legendary Romanian movie directors and producers.
Album: The Guess Who:American Woman (1970)
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Supported by the #1 hit "American Woman" (
Audio on GoEar) and its b-side "No Sugar Tonight" (
Music video on YouTube), American Woman quickly became one of, if not the, The Guess Who's most popular albums. Other fan favorites include "When Friends Fall Out", the pop-sounding "No Time" (
Music video on YouTube), and the haunting "Talisman" (
Music video on YouTube), all of which are fantastic. It was also, sadly, Randy Bachman's last album with the group before leaving to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive. All in all, it's a superb album by one of the best Canadian groups of all time.
Album: Deep Purple:Made In Japan (1973)
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Often hailed as one of the best live albums of all time, it's a popular selection from Deep Purple's catalogue. Consisting largely of material from Machine Head, it contains some classic hits. The seven minute jams of "Smoke On The Water" (
Music video on YouTube) and "Highway Star" (
Music video on YouTube) remain favorites on classic rock radio, and the viola solo in "Space Truckin'" (
Audio on GoEar) is one of the most unique sounds I've heard in a hard rock song. I think any music fan should at least check the album out, if not own it.
Album: John Fogerty:The Long Road Home (2005)
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Referring to John Fogerty's return to Fantasy Records after his stint with Warner Bros., it's a great compilation album. Combining his biggest Creedence hits (like "Proud Mary" (
Music video on YouTube), "Down on the Corner" (
Music video on YouTube), and "Who'll Stop the Rain?" (
Music video on YouTube)) with some choice cuts from his solo career (such as "Centerfield" (
Audio on GoEar), "The Old Man Down the Road" (
Audio on GoEar), and "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" (
Audio on GoEar)), it's got everything a Fogerty fan needs. Also included are several new live versions of classics like "Bootleg", "Fortunate Son", Almost Saturday Night", and "Rockin' All Over the World". I think it's a great album, and a great companion piece to his The Long Road Home - In Concert DVD.
