Album: Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison (1975) by Harmonium
Nominated By: LYRIC-Cako
Reason: This album is Harmonium's masterpiece. A blend of Quebecois folk and progressive rock, Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison is an album one cannot get tired of. It evokes images of green fields, falling autumn leaves and offers an overall tour of the seasons. The last song, Histoires Sans Paroles, is an instrumental piece about a "fifth season" that leaves the listener begging for more.

Album: At Fillmore East (1971) by The Allman Brothers Band
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Frequently placed alongside Cream's Live at the Fillmore as one of the quintessential live blues rock albums, it's one of The Allman Brothers Band's masterpieces. Showcasing the band's improvisational skills, every song rocks the show. Opening with the more compact "Statesboro Blues", and following segues into other hits like "Stormy Monday", "Midnight Rider", and the jam "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", it's no wonder the Allman Brothers were one of the most successful live acts of the 1970s. And concluding the album is an epic 23-minute jam of "Whipping Post". If you can make it through that song, you're a true Allman Brothers fan.

Album: Outlaws (1975) by The Outlaws
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Bookended by the Top 40 hit "There Goes Another Love Song" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and the classic rocking ten minute guitar battle "Green Grass & High Tides" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), The Outlaws' debut album shot the band into the national spotlight, reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard album chart. Also supporting the album are the country-influenced "Song In The Breeze" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and the touching "It Follows From Your Heart" (GoEar Audio on GoEar). I recently got the album as a belated birthday present, and it's gotten my attention pretty darn quick. It's definitely one of my keepers.

Album: Crack The Skye (2009) by Mastodon
Nominated By: cjm2fast4u
Reason: How do Mastodon do it? With every release they just seem to get better and better and better (and better). Anyway, for the past few months I have been noticing that there have been some great Prog Rock/Metal albums that have been posted up here. This is my reasoning as to why I have nominated Crack The Skye for Album Of The Week for I feel it will one day be viewed as a Sludge/Prog/Metal masterpiece (not to mention, it's freaking spectacular!). When I popped the newly bought Compact Disc in my computer, the first track, Oblivion, insantly caught my ear, especially with that very catchy chorus. Brann Dailor's vocals on the track are pretty sick too. Number 2 on the discs setlist is Divinations. It includes some really stunning drum fills and an amazing solo from lead guitarist, Brent Hinds. The next track, Quintessence, is an excellent collaboration from all five artists of the band. Did I say five? That's right, Mastodon have recruited Rich Morris to do some Keyboard parts for the album and they're just what give some of the tracks that extra punch (particuarly Quintessence). Next up is the epic - The Czar: I. Usurper II. Escape III. Martyr IV. Spiral. What a mouthful. For me, Troy Sanders bassline is what builds this song up to be so impressive. The guitarists Brent Hinds And Bill Kelliher incorporate some really prodigious proggy parts in The Czar that remind me of good old 70's prog rock. The Ghost Of Karelia has really cool Spacy elements. I love the vocals on it too, Troy Sanders really applicates himself on this track. Just like the featured artist from Neurosis Scott Kelly, who contributes vocals on the Title Track, Crack The Skye. The riffs on the song are thick 'n' heavy and accomadate nicely to Scott Kellys vocals. And last but not least, my favourite Track of the Album, The Last Baron. Another epic, this song has everything, Fantastic Vocals, Incredible Drums, Extravagant Guitars, Stupendous Bass, Overwhelming Riffs, Sensational Lyrics, Mind Blowing Solos and some Sweet Proggy Parts. (Thankyou thesaurus.com!) But really, this song is Unbelievably, Deadset, Without a Shadow Of A Doubt Orgasmic. What else can I say, this album rules! Mastodon Rules! Thanks For Reading.

Album: Spirit Black (2009) by Jorn
Nominated By: TheFinal-Sigh 03:50, September 5, 2009 (UTC)
Reason: Jorn Lande is a very talented artist. After leaving Masterplan due to creative differences, he started his own solo career. May we be ever thankful! Jorn keeps the sounds of the 70's and 80's alive while still giving his music a powerful heavy metal sound. Jorn has absolutely no problem singing in perfect English, and his voice is absolutely amazing! The songs from Spirit Black sound like classics, as well they should! They certainly deserve to be. Songs like The Last Revolution and the title track itself deliver to the fullest with hard-hitting riffs and lyrics, but Jorn can also sing not-so-heavy music, like World Gone Mad. As a testament to his talent, Arjen A. Lucassen had him play on the Ayreon album 01011001. The album, Spirit Black, sounds like a crossover of albums The Duke and Lonely Are The Brave, only the sound is much more defined and less experimental. As Jorn said, the fans "can expect a solid and defined record". The album is truly worth the time of any music lover. Even while singing heavy metal, many of his songs still deliver strong messages. My only hope is that Jorn will release at least one more solo album, as he has recently signed back with Masterplan. Even so, as Jorn says in The Last Revolution, "But my story will be hammered in stone". Jorn is without a doubt one of the most talented artists around now. And if you take the time to listen to his music, I'm sure you'll agree.

Album: Kapitulation (2007) by Tocotronic
Nominated By: Parsprototo
Reason: when you buy the album, there's a big sticker on the cover, saying "Album of the Year" and it's true, it definitely is the best german album 2007. Tocotronic kept changing their style from their early rough times of Digital Ist Besser (1995) over the albums K.O.O.K. and Tocotronic finally to the deep and sensitive sound of Tocotronic:Kapitulation (2007) as you can hear on every single track on the album. Overmodulating guitars got replaced with quiet and melancholic riffs without disortion. This has the effect that the music got even more intense and epathises with the perfectly poetic lyrics. Starting with Mein Ruin - an "epic melodrama", to quote frontman Dirk von Lotzow, and the Single-Released track Kapitulation - which shows the solution, the way out of 'Mein Ruin - two very deep and very poetic songs are at the beginning. Harmonie Ist Eine Strategie, Wehrlos and Imitationen are forming the lovesong-section of the Album and those lovesongs in fact are one of the deepest and most remarkable lovesongs in german of all time. In Sag Alles Ab and Luft, Tocotronic accentuate their progressive and critical approach to modern society. The last track on the Album, Explosion is one of the most touching and "atmosphere-charged" songs of all time and ends the disc - as the nealy unbearable voltage of the track - with the critical expression "no will will triumph" (orig. "kein Wille triumphiert") This Album is definitely worth to be called Album of the Week

Album: Legendary Tales (1997) by Rhapsody
Nominated By: DurasDrum
Reason: I've been a fan of Rhapsody for quite a while. They have, and will always have a special place in my heart. Though they haven't released anything in a while, I'm sad to say I've only felt the anticipation of a proper new album once in 2006, with their Triumph or Agony album. But I digress.
To me, Legendary Tales has to be one of the greatest albums ever made. Metal is usually expected to be loud and hard. This album has all that, plus more. The symphonic parts of the songs are simply beautiful. I was honestly mesmerized when I first listened to this album. Guitar solos by Luca Turilli, symphonic and medieval styled parts by keyboardist Alex Staropoli, and operatic vocals by Fabio Lione make this album more than magical. The beauty and power of it, and the epic tale it tells, is inexplainable.

Album: Southern Rock Gold (2005) by Various Artists
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: This is one of my favorite compilations in my collection. Combing the usual suspects like "Sweet Home Alabama" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and "Free Bird" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) from Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Heard It In A Love Song" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and "Can't You See" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) from The Marshall Tucker Band", and "There Goes Another Love Song" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and "Green Grass & High Tides" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) from The Outlaws, with more obscure hits like Gregg Allman's solo cover of "Midnight Rider" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), "Travelin' Shoes" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) by Elvin Bishop, and Please Be With Me" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) by Cowboy, all thirty-two songs have their own unique flavor, but undoubtedly belong in the Southern rock genre.

Album: Classic Rock Gold (2005) by Various Artists
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Although classic rock is too wide a genre to include every artist, this compilation album paints a pretty good portrait of the kinds of artists involved. Ranging from pop hits like The Hollies' "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) to hard rock numbers like Foghat's "Slow Ride" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and Scorpions' "Rock You Like A Hurricane" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), and even to new wave acts like The Cars, it's got everything. Classic rock might be a wide genre, but there's so much great music to enjoy.

Album: Nantucket Sleighride (1971) by Mountain
Nominated By: Cubs Fan2007
Reason: Mountain's sophomore album is a bit more focused than their previous effort, but there's still some great music. Opening with the driving "Don't Look Around" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), followed by the instrumental "Taunta (Sammy's Tune)", which segues into the six minute title track (YouTube Music video on YouTube), every track is pure hard rock. "Tired Angels" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) was written as a tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix, and the quirky "The Animal Trainer And The Toad" (GoEar Audio on GoEar) is a cute little pop jangle hit. It's a shame Mountain broke up when they did, because the core foursome made some awesome music.

Album: Reign In Blood (1986) by Slayer
Nominated By: cjm2fast4u
Reason: I was standing in my local music store, staring at this album, thinking to myself: "Why am I even considering this? I don't even like Slayer..." At the time, I only knew one Slayer song, which was Raining Blood, and at the time, i didn't like it much. Little did I know that this album would change my life. Or at least my taste in music. When I got home and popped in the CD and pressed play, my ears were greeted with some fast, heavy aggressive stuff a.k.a. Angel Of Death. I remember thinking: "Fuck... and I thought Pantera was heavy" After half an hour of listening to one of the finest thrash metal albums of all time (If not the best) I thought that the album was way too heavy for me and it was a waste of money. But like the fungus between toes, this album grew on me. After constant listening, this album still doesn't bore me and I recommend it for anyone. Favourite Songs: Angel Of Death, Raining Blood, Piece By Piece, Necrophobic, Postmortem.

Album: David Archuleta (2008) by David Archuleta
Nominated By: ilovedavidarchuleta
Reason: As you all know, well I hope you all know that David Archuleta is the season 7's runner up on American Idol. I wasn't an American Idol fan that time and I also wasn't a David Archuleta fan because of American Idol. The first time I heard David Archuleta was on the radio. That song was called "A Little Too Not Over You". I thought his vocals were amazing. I said wow, even though I never met him or saw him before I think I really like him. So i went to Youtube and searched for "A Little Too Not Over You" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and said, WOW!! His smile it's so....powerful and it could make anyone including me really happy. I think he really sings with his heart. So I read the comments and one of them said I can't wait to see him on American Idol tomorrow night. So I decided to watch. It was the first time I watched him on TV. So he sang "Touch My Hand" (YouTube Music video on YouTube)He sang with his heart and I really like that about him. He's totally real!! He's not faking it like a lot of singers. I've only been his fan for only 7 months (October right now) and in July I already went to his concert! That's 4 months of being a fan and then going to a concert of his! I never really go to concerts that much and this concert was one of my first ones. He also makes my day. I remember I was really sad and pissed one day and I just saw a video and it made my day. He makes everyone around him happy. He always tries his best. He's my role model. And I know I didn't choose the wrong one. He IS the one. And his songs are amazing so check them out!

Album: Frampton Comes Alive! (1976) by Peter Frampton
Nominated By: Cubs Fan
Reason: One of the best-selling live albums of all time, it became an instant smash when it was originally released in 1976. Supported by the Top 20 hits "Show Me The Way" (#6) (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and "Baby I Love Your Way" (#12) (YouTube Music video on YouTube), the album became a #1 hit and remained in that spot for ten weeks. The epic "Do You Feel Like We Do?" (GoEar Audio on GoEar), which ends the album, was released as an edited single, and also reached the Top 10. Only trailing Garth Brooks' Double Live as the best selling live album, I think it's as popular now as it was thirty years ago.

Album: A Hard Day's Night (1964) by The Beatles
Nominated By: Cubs Fan
Reason: The soundtrack to The Beatles' first feature film was their first album to feature entirely original compositions. Opening with the distinctive open chord of "A Hard Day's Night" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), I love the whole album. My favorite songs are "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), "I Should Have Known Better" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), and "Can't Buy Me Love" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), the latter of which ended side one. Side two consists of songs the band didn't include in the film, but also didn't want to waste the time they spent recording them. The album reached #1 on the Billboard album chart, and ironically, kept the band's next American release, Something New, at #2 for nine weeks, even though the two albums had eight tracks in common. All in all, it's a superb album from the Beatles' catalogue.

Album: Lights Out (1977) by UFO
Nominated By: Cubs Fan
Reason: The fourth album with former Scorpions guitarist Michael Schenker was a major hit in the United States, falling just shy of the Top 20 on the Billboard chart. The driving title track (YouTube Music video on YouTube) remains a fan favorite, and it contains some awesome guitar playing by Schenker. MS also contributed some great music and lyrics, in the form of tracks like "Gettin' Ready" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), "Try Me" (YouTube Music video on YouTube), and the album closer "Love To Love" (YouTube Music video on YouTube). The latter track and "Lights Out" were both featured in the film Detroit Rock City, and I think the album remains a staple of British hard rock.

Album: Abbey Road (1969) by The Beatles
Nominated By: Harry
Reason: It only makes sense that this is Rolling Stone Magazine's 14th greatest album of all time (among other accolades), and the group's 11th on their list. The album is unusual in that every song on this masterpiece was released as a single on October 4, 1969. Though all of them got airplay, the album yielded the singles, "Come Together"(Video) and "Something" (YouTube Music video on YouTube). I can never tire of the medley on side two which ends in a prophetic "The End". I am thankful for digital technology which makes repeated play so easy.

Album: Mob Rules (1981) by Black Sabbath
Nominated By: Cubs Fan
Reason: The last studio album recorded with Ronnie James Dio before he left to form Dio, it was a relatively big hit for Black Sabbath, reaching #29 on the Billboard album chart. Driven by the title track (YouTube Music video on YouTube), and other classic heavy metal staples like "The Sign Of The Southern Cross" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and "E5150" (GoEar Audio on GoEar), there's no argument that Ronnie J. has one of, if not the, most powerful voices in heavy metal music. If you like Heaven And Hell, I think you'll enjoy this follow-up album, as well.

Album: Ellipse (2009) by Imogen Heap
Nominated By: Timeoffire45
Reason: Imogen Heap has been widely regarded as one of the most eccentric artists in existence, being surpassed only by those in the caliber of Björk. Also, she has never been afraid to attempt something fresh and new, this being clearly demonstrated in this: her newest album. In here, we can find sounds from the rubbing of a board with nails stuck in it to chirping birds to a crackling fire. While Ellipse has received a mixed slew of reviews from critics (averaging roughly 3.5/5), everyday consumers who buy the album give significantly more positive reviews (averaging roughly 4.5/5). The album starts off with a more upbeat track, "First Train Home" (YouTube Music video on YouTube) and modulates fairly well in energy level, amounting to something akin to relaxing whilst hiding from a rainy day. However, that is not to say that everything on the album is the same: we have pieces such as "Earth" (GoEar Audio on GoEar) and "2-1" (GoEar Audio on GoEar (said “Two, One”) which are composed of minimalistic amounts of instrumental work (Earth having a single drum and nothing else) compared to the piece The Fire (GoEar Audio on GoEar which has no vocals whatsoever. Also, the mood of her songs can range from argumentatively upbeat ("Earth"), to philosophical melancholy (2-1), to blissfully peaceful (Between Sheets) (GoEar Audio on GoEar), to cynical, contemplative confusion ("Wait It Out") (GoEar Audio on GoEar). It's an album that will leave you sighing happily, having just thouroughly enjoyed yourself.

Album: Bring Me Your Love (2008) by City And Colour
Nominated By: Parsprototo
Reason: I first heard this album in Oct. 2009. Unfortunately, to this time, it wasn't easy to get it in Europe. Nearly impossible, but possible. Since this time I hear songs from the album very frequently in movies, tv-shows, etc. The reason why it's so popular is simple: Dallas Green is simply good. You may know him from his main-project, the post-hardcore band Alexisonfire where his voice is one of three between several electric guitars and loud drums. In his solo-side-project City And Colour, he comes up with an entire different tone. No electricity, just his acoustic guitar, sometimes with an harmonica, no drums and his soft voice telling really sad stories, and/or very poetic lyrics. Starting with Forgive Me, you can see one big motif which is a major thread throughout the disc: failing relationships followed by personal ruin. The very strong song The Death Of Me illustrates very intensive the thoughts of an alcoholic; while Confessions and Waiting deny love. There are some songs about desperation, like Constant Knot and What Makes A Man, where Dallas Green describes the feeling of being at rock bottom and what finally makes a man to walk away from his mind. Espacially this two songs are written in a very personal way, as if Dallas Green has really written it in some minutes as he was down. The most impressive song surely is Sleeping Sickness where he sins a duet with Gordon Downie. There are also at least two real lovesongs on the album: As Much As I Ever Could and The Girl, last one is the most sweetest declaration of love I know. Body In A Box is a philiosophical song. It's questioning the sense of spending energy to mourn about the dead while there are so many troubled souls out there, still alive, who are desperately hoping for someone who'd help them. Something we may all should at least think about once.
