This help page discusses user translations. For songs that have actually been released in more than one language, see Help:Multiple Languages. |
General
Translations from any language into any other language are welcome!
However, to avoid huge page sizes, translations should not be added to the original song page. Instead, individual subpages should be created for each translation, by adding the language code of the translation after a slash. (See here for a list of language codes.)
Example: The English translation of the Faroese song Teitur:Lat Tárini Falla should be placed on the subpage Teitur:Lat Tárini Falla/en.
Non-Latin based scripts
If the original song is written in a script not related to roman or latin characters, a romanization should be provided on a subpage to allow the song to be read by people who are unfamiliar with that script. To create a translation subpage for romanizations, add /roman to the original page name.
For additional details on the romanization of specific scripts, please refer to Help:Romanization.
Non-English titles
The {{TransTitle}} template can be used on song pages with non-English titles to display their English translation:
{{TransTitle|Spanish|My Sandals|Mis Sandalias}}produces:
- The Spanish title of this song is Mis Sandalias. The English translation is My Sandals.
- The third parameter (song title) is optional; by default the song part of the pagename is used.
- For non-Latin song titles, add the parameter
|romanization=
{{TransTitle|Japanese|Blizzard of Flowers|花吹雪|romanization=Hanafubuki}}produces:
- The Japanese title of this song is 花吹雪. This is read as Hanafubuki and means Blizzard of Flowers.
Original song page
To link to the translation subpages from the original song page, the language code of each translation needs to be entered in the {{TranslatedSong}} template. Place this template directly above the opening <lyrics> tag. However, if any "badges", such as {{WP-Song}}, {{No.1}}, etc. are present on the page, place this template directly above them:
{{Song||Teitur|star=Green}}
{{TransTitle|Faroese|Let Your Tears Fall|Lat tárini falla}}
{{TranslatedSong|da|de|en}}
{{WP-Song|Lat tárini falla}}
<lyrics>
Lat tárini falla, har ið tú gongur
...
Translation subpage
To link back to the original page, add the {{TranslatedSong}} template to the translation subpage. If there are additional translations, enter the language code of each of them after the |current= parameter:
{{TranslatedSong|current=en|da|de}}
The original lyrics can also be added to the translation subpage, if preferred, by using the {{Translation}} template:
{{TranslatedSong|current=en}}{{Translation}}
'''Let your tears fall'''
<lyrics>
Let your tears fall, wherever you are
...
</lyrics>
|v-align=top|
'''Original (Faroese)'''
<lyrics>
Lat tárini falla, har ið tú gongur
...
</lyrics>
|}produces:
|
Let your tears fall Let your tears fall, wherever you are
... |
Original (Faroese) Lat tárini falla, har ið tú gongur
... |
When creating a new song page, {{Song}} and {{SongFooter}} templates automatically appear in the edit box. As these are redundant on the translation subpage, please delete them.
