The Templates
Edit
The essential page ranking templates, {{Song Rank}}, {{Song Info}}, {{Watcher}}, & {{Cert}} and their surrounding box (created by {{Star Box}}) are placed at the top of the talk page of the song being ranked. The talk page is reached by using the "Discussion" tab at the top of the song's page. (Any discussion about the song should still be on the talk page, but set below this template group.)
The grouping of page ranking templates is shown below. Portions shown in GREEN should be changed to correctly reflect the state of that parameter:

Please note that the {{Watcher}} and {{Cert}} templates are optional, but are required for the Song page to attain the Silver, and in the case of Cert, Gold rank.
There is also an additional parameter that can be added to the {{Song Info}} template for songs that are made freely available for downloading from the artist's Official Site:

Star on Song Page
Edit
In addition to the aforementioned templates, the parameter |star= is added to the {{Song}} template. This provides a visible indicator of the song's current rank by way of displaying a star on the song page itself. An example of this is given below:
{{Song|ALBUM TITLE (DATE)|ARTIST NAME|star=STAR TYPE}}
Star Types
Edit
Green
Edit
Green is the first level in page ranking. Song pages displaying a Green star are new and in much need of human attention. Many of these have been created by bots who never quite know if what they are doing is correct. Another thing about bots is that they don't have very good hearing, so they aren't always able to tell if the lyrics do actually relate to the song for which the page has been created. This being so, the pages need to be checked over to check this sort of thing, also to ensure they are formatted correctly and contain basic information.
To upgrade a Green song page to Bronze the following details all need to be checked, and where a parameter exists for these in the {{Song Info}} template, updated upon completion to reflect this. (See the section headed Song Info Status below.):
- the page name is formatted in accordance with LyricWiki's page naming policy,
- the page has both the {{Song}} and {{SongFooter}} templates,
- the "song" and "fLetter" parameters in the SongFooter have been completed,
- the artist name is in the correct position within the Song template,
- the lyrics are correctly placed inside the
<lyrics> </lyrics>tags, - the lyrics are "human readable"
Once the requirements for upgrading have been met, the {{Song Rank}} on the song's talk page can then be upgraded, together with the "star" parameter in the Song template, from Green to Bronze. However if the page has a particular problem that you are unable to resolve, it may be more appropriate to rank it Violet.
Violet
Edit
Song pages displaying a Violet star have special needs. Usually, these revolve around non-English languages and non-Latin alphabets and the unique challenges they present. Violet pages are tagged with the {{Code Purple}} template on the song's talk page, together with an indication of the problem. Specifying a sub-type to the problem greatly helps the people with the right kind of expertise find the page.
Songs at the Violet level may have all the paramaters completed in the {{Song Info}} template, but until the special problems are corrected, they should not have their level changed.
Bronze
Edit
A song page displaying a Bronze star indicates that someone has already checked the page and confirmed that it has both the {{Song}} and {{SongFooter}} templates, the lyrics are between the lyrics tags and that the basic information referred to under the heading "Green" above has been correctly added to the page.
To upgrade a Bronze song page to Silver the following details all need to be checked, and where a parameter exists for these in the {{Song Info}} template, updated upon completion to reflect this. (See the section headed Song Info Status below.):
- the lyrics are correctly formatted,
- spellings, typos, capitalizations have been corrected,
- the correct "type" parameter has been added to the Song template,
- the "fa" (featured artists) parameter has been added to the Song template where applicable,
- the "album" parameter has been completed in the Song template,
- the "language" parameter has been completed in SongFooter (unless the song is instrumental) N.B. Please remember to enter the English name for the language with the initial letter capitalised, e.g. German not deutsch,
- the "asin" and "iTunes" parameters have both been completed in SongFooter where applicable.
In addition to the above, the song page must have at least one official "Watcher", someone who has "adopted" the song page and entered their name in the {{Watcher}} template on the song's talk page. Watching a page effectively means protecting it from vandals and ensuring that any edits made to the page are correct. N.B. While anyone can become an official watcher of any page at any time, a page cannot proceed beyond Bronze without there being one. (See also the section headed User Name below.)
Once the requirements for upgrading have been met, the {{Song Rank}} on the song's talk page can then be upgraded, together with the "star" parameter in the Song template, from Bronze to Silver.
Silver
Edit
The penultimate page rank is Silver. Song pages ranked Silver have at least one "Watcher", all the important information has been obtained, checked, corrected and completed. By now the page is fast approaching perfection. You're almost there, but there is still a little more that needs to be done before the song page can be upgraded to Gold.
To upgrade a Silver song page to Gold, the following details all need to be checked, and where a parameter exists for these in the {{Song Info}} template, updated upon completion to reflect this. (See the section headed Song Info Status below.):
- a "Credits" section created beneath the last lyrics tag, detailing the composer and lyricist of the song (see Credits section below),
- the timed lyrics parameter completed in {{SongFooter}}, linking to the song on lrcdb.org where applicable,
- the youtube parameter completed in SongFooter, linking to the song on YouTube where applicable,
- the goear parameter completed in SongFooter, linking to the song on GoEar where applicable,
- {{WP-Song}} badge added to the song page beneath the {{Song}} template where applicable, linking to the article at Wikipedia,
- {{B-Hits}}, {{No.1}} badges added to the song page, together with any other awards, Grammy's etc. that may apply,
- {{Cover}}, {{Covered}} or {{Cover2}} template added to the page where applicable,
- the additional albums the song appears on correctly formatted by the use of the "album2" and "album3" parameter in the Song template (or for more than 2, by using the {{Additional Albums}} template),
- all remaining optional parameters in the SongFooter, i.e. those relating to external links, checked and completed, e.g. MusicBrainz, AllMusic, etc.
In addition to the above, the lyrics need to be certified. This involves listening to the recording (the same version of the song to which the lyrics relate), comparing this to the lyrics and confirming the accuracy of the same by way of completing the {{Cert}} template. (See also the sections headed Certification and User Name below.)
Once the requirements for upgrading have been met, the {{Song Rank}} on the song's talk page can then be updated, together with the "star" parameter in the Song template, to show that the song page has successfully achieved the rank of Gold!
Gold
Edit
Songs at the Gold level are complete! All necessary information has been filled in, it has at least one Watcher, and the lyrics have been certified as being correct by having someone listen to the song and compare them to the actual recording. Small changes and updates may take place, but a Gold level Song page should be an example of excellence!

- all parameters in the Song Info template are either "done" or "not applicable"
Song Info Status
Edit
The following may be used to mark a section's status when completing the parameters in the {{Song Info}} template:
- unknown - this has not been completed on the Song page
- done - this has been completed on the Song page
- not applicable - this has not been completed on the Song page because it does not apply to this Song.
- Example: Unless a song is widely known and has become very successful, whether this be by being released as a single or not, it likely does not have a Wikipedia entry. Such songs would therefore have the Wikipedia parameter marked as "not applicable".
User's Name
Edit
For both the {{Watcher}} template and the {{Cert}} template, merely enter your basic User Name. If you are MrLyrics, then enter MrLyrics in those template locations. Do not enter your User Name with the User: prefix.
Certification
Edit
Whenever certifying a Song page, the lyrics should always be compared with the actual recording. Comparing to lyrics included with the Song's album to the lyrics displayed can be helpful to match spelling (British artists often use British-styled spelling, etc.) and punctuation, but the lyrics of the actual recording may vary from official lyrics given in printed form in the liner notes, or on the Artist's website. Mentioning in the {{Cert}} template's Means of Certification parameter that the lyrics were also checked with these printed forms is encouraged, but to be properly certified the lyrics must be compared to the recorded version and be as they are sung.
- Example: Audio comparison made, spelling & punctuation matched with the lyrics with the CD.
Please also note that, whilst anyone can certify a song at any time (and more than one person can also certify the lyrics of a song), the page still cannot proceed beyond the level for which all the required information has been checked and obtained.
Special Notes
Edit
Credits
Edit
In order for the Credits section to be marked as done, the Song's composer and lyricist need to be listed in a Credits section under the Song's lyrics. If one person was both composer and lyricist, then a single "Written by" note can be used listing the one author. Other credits, such as featured artists and musicians can also be listed, but only the composer and lyricist are required.
Examples:
- Composer: Richard Rodgers
- Lyricist: Oscar Hammerstein II
- or:
- Written by Paul Simon
